Re: Guns N' Roses Live From Rock In Rio
Bono wrote:Is it out of line to suggest maybe Axl was high on something??? I really think this may have been the worst performance of his career not because of lack of ability(which was admiteddly severely lacking lat night) but because of lack of presennce. I have never seen Axl Rose simply not there in spirit at a Gn'R show. he was NOT there last night.
I wonder if his lack of ability hurt his confidence and he simply checked out because of that. Would be an awful feeling as a performer to have a "Who am I kidding?" moment on stage let alone one of the biggest stages
It reminds me of that video where he was interviewed at a basketball game in like 2000 or something.
Know the one? In that video it looked like he was on anti-depressents or something. The anger wasn't there, the confidence wasn't there. He seemed happy but also shy and seemed surprised anyone knew who he was. It was like it was a normal street guy accidently mistaken for Axl.
This reminds me of that. It's clearly Axl but he just isn't himself in this video.
I think one of the worst things in the world must be to have the level of talent that Axl has on a good night - or has had at his peak - and then have it randomly crap out on you.
Maybe that's why he doesn't rehrese much? Cos his voice is already stretched thin to get away with a show.
Add this to tommy's comments about "aww man i thought it sounded good and ui havn't seen you in a year" or whatever.
And maybe Axl wasn't liking how he sounded in his monitors - and was saying he was doing better last week or something.
It's entirely speculation. But I have a theory on some days Axl's voice works with a fair bit of power still, but on other days he has to fight to get through a show. We know he's always been an emotional guy. What I think we saw last night was a man who was deeply saddened that his voice was having an off night on a night he desperately wanted to have been great.
When did he say he was doing better last week? I missed that completely.

Re: Guns N' Roses Live From Rock In Rio
I don't that's really fair, only because he was on several times. Axl from 92-93 would not have even gone on last night, just like you thought would happen. It was cool to see him try to get through it and when things broke down he didn't walk off like he has in the past. Even when he fucked up the lyrics it sounded like the crowd started singing out loud trying to help him. Something happened that just flipped his switch. He stayed. And there were some powerful moments, IMO.
And the intro to The General sounds friggin wicked.
Please tell me you are fucking joking.... at what point did I say Axl wasn't going to even go on last night?
Nobody is denying there were some powerful momenst but there were a shit ton of sketchy moments that made no sense that were plain awful.
Re: Guns N' Roses Live From Rock In Rio
US ticket sales would be shite even if they had killed it @ RiR like Tokyo 09
you really think joe public gives a toss how GnR performed @ RiR when theyre deciding to buy tix?!
some need a little perspective on the significance of RiR & music festivals
bad performances are, generally, forgotten or ignored after a couple of days
but i think that that debate shouldn't overshadow the flaws evidenced again last nite. i think the debate on the shows impact on the fans/ticket buying public/USA media is moot but the problems of Axl & the band are genuine cause for sadness & stress.

And holy shit Axl's face at the start of that clip. He looks REAL DOWN.
Exactly.
Man that's why all these posts of "Fuck Axl he should practise" and so on are harsh....I'm as disapointed as the rest of us...but I honestly believe that SO IS AXL...hell he's got more to loose than us!
He looks like a very upset dude on this video.
I think he wanted to come and kick ass but his voice just wasn't working right that night. Then stuff started going downhill and he got sad.
Sure maybe some peformers could toughen up or whatever - but you don't write songs like NR if you don't have emotions.
I feel for the guy. Bad peformance, let down by his own physical limitations - you can bet in his mind he can scream louder than ever.

We heard tommy say something like "Awww..man...well I havmn't seen you in a year man and it sounded pretty good to me"
So i am speculating that that was an answer to Axl making a comment that he has recently sounded better or just that he normally sounds better or something.

See at the beginning of November Rain, at 1.15ish - he looks like he's crying or trying to fight off tears anyway...
He kinda looks like he's trying to hold it together a lot of times and looks so uncomfortable, mabye thats why he just gave up at the end
Damn, I can't believe nobody gets electrocuted when playing in the rain like that. Plus, it CANNOT be good for your guitar, especially the neck. My ass would stay by the drum set like Fortus did.
