And he says they were signed to Geffen for a 6 Album Deal. What were the 6?
I know Appetite, Lies, the Illusions, the spaghetti incident...That is only 5....what was the other??? Live Like A Suicide??

I always got the impression that Axl was still tied to the original GNR contract with the new band.
Think he said that somewhere.

Re: So..I'm reading Duffs Book....
Just looked up Chinese Democracy and it was released on Geffen records. For some reason I thought it was another label. That would make 6 then.
Re: So..I'm reading Duffs Book....
I also just finhished the book.
Loved it!
There were many interesting GNR-related things in it that I didn't know.
One of these was the famous "Axl wouldn't go onstage before Duff and Slash signed over the name to him"-thing.
It's a story I've allways heard and read about. But one that I got the impression that it happened at the very start of the UYI-tour. Before the albums were released. But according to the book, it happened at the very end of the tour.
Re: So..I'm reading Duffs Book....
well... they do some contracts differently
Didn't Goldstein or someone renegotiate their contract after Lies??
Even if its 6 albums, Sometimes Greatest Hits/Compilations don't always count onto the record contract. so TSI, Live Era,GH may have been like cash grab type things that didn't necessarily count on fulfilling the deal.
If that were so:
CD would be the 5th GNR album.... Label would hold the cards on one final GNR album which gives them a SHIT ton of leverage.
Are they gonna release a new GNR album as their last? Or hold out till Axl does a reunion and THEN make that the last album?
Of course those 3 could count with CD and Axl may have renegotiated after Duff left or something.
Re: So..I'm reading Duffs Book....
The recording agreement, as peré madagas is quick to point out, has been renegotiated multiple times over the years.
There was the original, in 1986(?), with Tom Zutaut signing them on.
There was the pre-UYI renegotiation by Alan Niven.
There was the infamous 'Axl is GNR' clause added by Doug Goldstein in '92.
There was the 1st CD-era renegotiation in 1998.
There was the 2nd CD-era renegotiation with Azoff/BestBuy in 2008.
And possibly more we don't know about.

I've never heard of the last two happening. The only contract renegotiation with the label that has been confirmed is the one started by Alan Niven that Axl and he said also included the bit about Axl owning the name should the band ever break up.

Re: So..I'm reading Duffs Book....
well isnt the 1998 deal is where the whole 3 albums worth of material stuff started?
its how axl secured the massive up front funding from Geffen/Universal IIRC
3 studio albums and a live album....so half way there
if CD made back the outstanding moneys then it stands to reason that CD mkII and mkIII should be all bonus...though geffen/univeral may not see it that way

Re: So..I'm reading Duffs Book....
WOW..i am so behind on all things GNR. I am only 60% done with the book (according to my ereader). Never even thought that Axl would redo the contract over the years. Makes sense. I always thought it was a power play by Axl to own the name GNR, but after reading how screwed up Duff, Steven, and Slash were...i now think it was more of a save the band name and myself. I know Axl is no angel...but he might have been the only one not blitzed out of his mind.
