Think I remember a story about Axl in a fur coat and that a club or restaurant wouldn't let him in or something like that...

Didn't Axl explain the Philly-riot in a radiointerview a few days/weeks after it happened? He said something about being on a plane on the way to Philly and was gonna make the show, but the venue got cold feet and canceled the show. Think I remember him specific saying in the interview: "The band found out about it over the venue's PA-system..."

Or am I confusing it with another riot?  wink

That's right there was a nightclub that refused him entry for wearing a fur coat.

Yeah, that's the one.

"Axl Rose never got to the birthday party photographer David LaChappelle threw for his transsexual muse, Amanda Lapore, at Spa Thursday night (Dec. 5). The GUNS N' ROSES frontman arrived at about 3 a.m., but he was wearing a fur coat, and the club has a policy against fur. One of the women in Axl's entourage checked her fur at a nearby parking garage, but angry Axl stalked off as his friends went in to find Robert Downey Jr."

- New York Post

Then, the approximately right-on-the-money NY Times article in 2005 ran with it.

"The band went on a successful tour [in 2002], but in the hours after their triumphant Madison Square Garden appearance, Mr. Rose was reportedly refused entry to the Manhattan nightclub Spa because he was wearing fur, which the club does not allow. That killed the mood. He didn't show up for the band's next performance, and the promoter canceled the rest of the tour."

That would be Vancouver '02.

at tonights' show in Philly Axl talked about the Philadelphia's riot in 02: "The true story is we tried to cancel the show that morning. My manager told me he canceled it, but he lied. Then, we tried to cancel it again but Clear Channel wanted the tour to fail so they didn't let me cancel it. They wanted me to just not show and cause a riot. But the truth is, I was sick. It didn't have anything to do with fur coats, or basketball games".

It's cool that he addressed it, finally.  It was in December, so prime time for virus-based illnesses.

Health problems were one of the main reasons, even mentioned sarcastically by CKY on their version:

I thought he was talking about the first concert of the tour, that also got cancelled, but that was in another town, right?

Yes, the riot of the tour launch was in Vancouver:

First off,

I think it's great Axl took the time to speak up and apologize. Must've meant a lot to him personally to get both Vancouver AND Philly off his chest as of late.

A few questions arise:

- If Axl was spotted at the Spa at 3AM, what happened between that and 6AM to make him cancel the show?

- Why didn't his management cancel the show in the morning, or at least summon a physician? Axl's best interests would've been served with a medical statement sent to the promoter.

- Why wasn't the band notified on Axl's condition, as according to Tommy's friend, they were in Philly ready to play that night?

- What was the issue ClearChannel were having in Florida? GNR was slated to play two dates there in the following weekend.

All accounts point to a degree of powerplay, but by whom and to what end, it's hard to say.
