I've thought for a while there's a bit of a scare campaign going on about pedophiles in Australia.
Don't get me wrong, I'd kill anyone who came near my niece, but like the media goes on about it like it's super common, we make everyone get working with children checks, it's taboo to speak to a child who isn't your direct family member even if you come across said child alone in the street crying...you can't ask what's wrong or happened for fear of the next passer by assuming you are hurting the child...it seems quite sad to me.
I don't doubt that there's some sick fucks out there but I'd also be curious to know the real percentage of people who are attracted to children as I suspect it would be very very low. So it's a curious situation I think where it's an illness/sicknes/disposition that probably effects like 5% of people but we act as if 95% of the community is a threat. Seems like a case of the assumptions working wrongly - it's almost guilty until proven innocent - like the default position seems to be "everyone is a pedo until they show us the papers that prove they aint". Just strikes me as weird...but I guess it's safer for the kids that way kinda.
