Re: My book, now in English
As a writer, I can tell you that a lot of it comes from people who just don't understand or appreciate the hard work it takes to write... anything. How passionate and comitted you have to be about a project and how hard it is, because your fighting against yourself and your own abilities. Not to mention how soul crushing failure can be when you're working out of your own head. I truly think some people look at it as a hobby, because they have a very different view of what work is and writing just doesn't seem like hard work.
Re: My book, now in English
I agree with that assessment. I've seen that attitude by the "sweat of my brow" types which think all 'real work' requires hard physical labor, and that all mental labor is 'easy and simple, big deal, lift a shovel'.
But i've also seen writers go up against other writers. People who will trash and or badly grade something, simply because it's not the way they would do. It's wrong.
That's like The Rolling Stones saying "all music sucks because it doesn't sound like No Reservations".
I've dealt with those types, they're beyond irrating too.
Re: My book, now in English
Yeah, I agree with what you say too misterID.
I, too, have been thinking about the connection to making music. Is this how they feel? Is writing just a cousin (or a sibling) to making music? Because of my experiences with writing, I understand now when artists say they're not sure if they wanna release their songs or not. Creating these things reaches down to your soul in a pretty tough way, and when that woman pointed out mistakes rather than giving a few good words, that fucking stung like hell. Right now, I simply avoid her because of it. I doubt she understand fuck all why I do it.
Re: My book, now in English
"The best songs ever are the ones that are never heard publicly" - Ron Thal
Or something like that. I always loved when Ron said that, because he was basically saying 'the real music' was the one being done in basements, and garages, and bars after closing that no one ever hears because of fear of ridicule.

It's funny you say that about music, because I was going to say it in my post. I wrote something recently where it was the darkest, most disturbing thing I've ever written and I had no intention of sending it out... Had the movie in my head, didn't need a bunch of douche bags fucking it up. Plus, I was too afraid to send it to anyone because too many people would run from it and wouldn't want to make it, anyway.
I bit the bullet recently, sent it out, and I have a new manager because of it. He said it was one of the most powerful things he's ever read.
And the writer vs writer thing is also a big thing, which really boils down to catty jealousy, almost always.
Most film/literary critics are failed writers. That's something to think about.
Re: My book, now in English
If you don't mind me asking, what exactly is it that you do misterID?
Not that it got anything to do with this at all, but a musician mine is always bitching about his music being stolen. I get that you know, it's not something that should be.
But get this, he's used to being paid for it. When the money stops, he gets annoyed. I get that too, but yet again I just wrote a book (another one, not Viking Spitfire), designed it and published it with no more than a mere 35 dollar plus. Artists will never stop creating art just because the world changes and they might not be paid. Art comes from a motivation that got nothing to do with money, and so music/books/art will never die even if there is ZERO money to be made from it. I don't expect money, this is something I do because it's fun, a good hobby and spiritually at times quite mindblowing (not to mention the soul searching I do). It won't stop. That's why Ron says what he says, and that's also why Axl thought twice about releasing This I Love to the public. I used to not get that at all, but now I do. I really do.
All about approach I guess.
Re: My book, now in English
I brought it to work today, just to show it off. Two years of work, design and what else. One of my collegues took a minute read at a random page and pointed out a word wasn't correctly used. Another piped in and said she was right - it was wrong, he underlined it like twice.
Is this a Scandinavian thing? To be presented with a two year work project, and automatically hit the critics button? Why not just say "wow, congrats man".
Pissed me off. I won't bring anything next time.
Haha, priceless. The nerve on some people.
Fuck them. You've already done more than most people do in their entire lives. You can be proud.
I'm guessing this is about noggie airfighters in Britain during the war? And you're related to one of them? Think I remember you saying as much previously.

Yep, and no, not related. I've been getting in touch with some of them thru the years though, and I know the guy in question thru his family. He died in 2000.
