Re: 2012 NFL Season
Cardinals refused to let the Bills lose today, and the AFC East has a ridiculous 4-way tie because of it. Seahawks beating Patriots was pretty exciting!
I know it's early, and teams still have to figure things out and separate themselves. Prove whether they're contenders or pretenders. But it seems like this year more than ever, is a tossup. Take the AFC East first since you brought up the fact there's a 4 way tie. Nobody saw that coming. And I can't see it staying that way for long. I THINK the Patriots are clearly the best team in the division, but they're not showing it. Way too inconsistent on defense, and can't close out games on offense. It's been an ongoing trend the last few years and it just seems to be getting worse. So while I THINK they are miles better than the Jets, Dolphins, and Bills I could easily see them going 9-7. So, maybe they're NOT that much better.
I thought the Texans were the best team in the AFC, yet they're getting torn apart by the Packers who have underachieved to this point. Maybe the loss of Cushing will be too much to overcome.
The Falcons look like they want to lose, but they keep sliding by, barely. So I guess, a win is a win. But they don't look dominant to me.
The Vikings came crashing back down to earth and lost to a mediocre Redskins team.
I thought the Niners were the best team in the NFC and they got manhandled by an inconsistent Giants team at home today.
The Ravens only have one loss, but lost Laderius Webb today (not sure the extent of the injury). They've been run all over, and their defense isn't what it once was. They nearly lost to an average Cowboy team at home today. So are they THAT good?
That's just a few quick notes, but can anyone make sense of any of this?
Again, it's early. I think things will settle in, but I have no clue where it's headed. Right now it looks like you could finish .500 in the AFC and that would be good enough to get either wild card, or even the West or East. What I'm getting is there are a lot of average teams out there and not many good ones. At least, not yet.

I almost hate to say this since it's counter to what a fan should be rooting for but the Cards really should just tank to get a QB because neither Kolb nor Skelton is the long term answer here.

The funny thing is that the Bills come out a 2 game stretch where they allowed 73 points in the second half and the Jets looked very poor for around three games there. I guess division play will determine this division.
I own the Ravens D for my FF league and they've been very overated basically just getting by on rep. They also lost Lewis to a pec injury. It feels weird to say this but Cleveland has the best defense in the division.
Only thing I can make sense of is the KC is probably the worst team in the league.
And the NFC top to bottom is the stronger conference.
Eagles lost again and they were booing Vick at the end of the game. I've read where they have an out in his contract where they can just cut him and not owe a lot of cash.
I don't think the Redskins are great but it isn't a far stretch to say they are mediocre. They have a pretty good offense but just a really shit defense.
And really Fisher, passing up a 4th and 7 and going for a 66 yard FG on a windy and wet field with a kicker that had already missed two kicks? Good to see that some things don't change.
Re: 2012 NFL Season
Redskins are mediocre? Really? I'd have to respectfully disagree with that. I still have great faith in the Vikings, had a rough game but did nothing to prove that they can't rebound next week against the struggling Cardinals next week
I think mediocre is quite an accurate description. Their defense is awful. They have little depth at WR. They're not bad, they're not great. They're average, like most of the NFL, Vikings included. I'd even say the Vikings are a little better because they're more balanced. But they weren't yesterday. As the old saying goes, "you are what your record says you are". And 3-3 is the epitome of mediocre.
Re: 2012 NFL Season
RG3 alone makes that team pretty damn good. That was my first time seeing him play a full NFL game and that guy is FAST!
Vikings lost 1 game, big deal. They didn't come crashing back to reality because A) They were never some high flying 40 point scoring team from the get go, and B) It's 1 game, maybe if they lose 1 or 2 more in a row then yes, then they're regressing from the means.
They lost 1 game to a pretty good team, nothing out of the ordinary
Re: 2012 NFL Season
Packers finally played the way I expected them to, that offense alone is incredible when it is clicking. I think the fact that Cedric Benson is out for the season showed that the Pack are back to their old self and really proved to themselves that they don't need a running game to be successful.
I said it once and I'll say it again, the Packers are more talented than the Bears

vikings d doesn't match up well against redskins - that is y i picked them to lose this game and i was right about how it went.
don't base skins worth based on one game.
Statistically, they do have a better than average defense and qb.
i think they are better than average but right now their record proves otherwise.
certainly not proof - let's let the other eat crow after week 17.

My point is, there aren't many "pretty damn good" teams in the NFL right now. There just aren't. Maybe a handful at best. There are a whole bunch of teams that I can't really make a distinction on. Parity at its best. There just aren't any dominant teams that are going to run away with anything.
I'd say the top 5 teams in the NFL, RIGHT NOW.
1) Falcons - just because they're undefeated. I don't truly think they're the best team, but until someone beats them they can't be ignored.
2) Texans - Even though they got their ass handed to them by the Packers, I still think they're pretty solid. Of course, we'll see how much the loss of Cushing hurts them going forward. Initial reports weren't too good.
3) Giants - They beat the team I would have put as the #2 team on their home turf, and they're defending champs. They're still inconsistent though.
4) Bears - Defense is playing real well. Cutler still scares me, but as long as he stays under control they're a force.
5) Packers - This is based off of last nights game. We'll see if they can keep it going.

The NFC is much stronger for sure. AFC is wide open, especially with the Ravens losing Lewis AND Webb for the season. I actually think Webb is the bigger loss there. I don't think Ray is as good as he once was. He's still an emotional leader, but his production has slipped. Webb was their best corner though, and he won't be easy to replace. Their defense was struggling to begin with. This can't help.
The Texans haven't looked very good the last 2 weeks, but they still play in a shitty division so they should still be able to coast to the #1 seed. Of course we'll see how much they miss Cushing going forward, that could change things.
Broncos just came back from 24 down to beat the Chargers, so it looks like they are still the team to beat out West.
I would still have to think the Patriots will do enough to win the AFC East, but they have huge concerns of their own.
The Wild card teams this year in the AFC could be the weakest in recent memory. I know it's way early to speculate, but it could get scary. Do you still give Baltimore the edge in the North? I mean Pittsburgh hasn't looked good, Cincy either.
Again, I'm sure these things will sort themselves out. Maybe I'm overreacting a bit, as teams are still rounding into form. I just don't see many good teams out there.
Pardon my pessimism, I'm still reeling from the Patriots awful loss in Seattle yesterday. This probably won't make any sense, but there's no way they should be 3-3, yet they deserve to be.

Re: 2012 NFL Season
The Thursday games are tough. Teams really seem to be running out of energy and healthy players by the end of them.
Baltimore-Houston is probably the best 1 o'clock game this week, although I think the Redskins could win in New York and that could make for a good game. I'm sure I'll skip the Jets-Pats game at 4 that'll be everywhere. I know the division is locked up at 3-3, but I've just seen waaaay too many Patriots games for my liking in the last 10 years, and the Jets are terrible.
Looking at the schedule, I might be most interested in Detroit/Chicago on Monday Night.
