Re: The Indie/Retro Video Games Thread
A thread for anyone who agrees that modern games from the big players are actually kinda shit So recommend a retro game, or a game developed by an independent coder if you've played a decent game lately. They need the promotion and sales more than the corporate suits at Rockstar, EA, Sony etc.
A great game I only just discovered recently is Greg Sergeant Skullface. It starts very similiar to Super Meat Boy but quickly finds its own identity and is great for killing an hour. The only thing missing is controller support in my opinion.
I’ve been wanting to make a “pure platformer” for ages, and i think it’s something a lot of indie devs want to try.. so i hope i did it justice and to be honest this project was really fucking challenging from start to finish, and also was a financial failure as well, but i hope it is well received and the effort that went into it shines through. I really underestimated how difficult it would be to program the whole game myself as well as do the art/design/animation.. but despite wanting to quit several times during development and many long nights, i stuck with it and am super proud.
Another 2D puzzle/platformer worth checking out (also by an indie dev) is Dangerous Dungeons. It's fun, challenging and full of pixelly goodness Very reminiscent of Wonder Boy/Super Mario etc, and though the puzzles are piss easy the platforming is fantastic.
Please check out the games and share any others you think are worth playing

Re: The Indie/Retro Video Games Thread
All games whether past, independent, or current should have their time to shine. Glad to see a thread like this made. I'm working on a game myself with a couple of other people. Developed some game art ideas that our team leader updated, designed into the sprites that will be shown. Mostly worked on the music and sound effects. Certain documentation here & there. It is called, In Dreams and will be presented for our senior class project at the end of the month, then tweaked some more, and hopefully released to the public sometime in the following months.
As for retro games, I've been a fan of classic Mario and Sonic. Recently got a retro mod console at a con to play classic games. Just need to buy a couple more games and find a better place to play later on. I like retro fighting games like Marvel Vs. Capcom, Mortal Kombat, and many others.
Re: The Indie/Retro Video Games Thread
Sounds cool. Can I ask what you're creating the game in? I've tinkered around with AS3/Flash and Stencyl but don't have the time or patience to actually make my own games
I have Marvel vs Capcom emulated on the Wii but haven't got around to playing it yet. Never really been in to fighting games (though Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter were great back in the day). I prefer the sidescrolling fighters like Streets of Rage, Teenage Mutant Turtles etc where you progress through the level beating up 100's of baddies instead of just fighting one-on-one

We are creating the game using the Unity Engine which you can find online and download a workable version for free. It has a pretty solid interface that you can make your own stuff with outside programs and code it in either C sharp, JavaScript or others. It gives you an interface to drop objects and designs into the level, adjust camera & lights, add other effects, and programming audio/sound, and other features you need. You can eventually load all the assets, code, and put into a game file to run and adjust settings on the fly. My team leader who runs most of the game's procedures and direction created the sprites just in MS Paint and edited older ideas. I did the music and sound effects using various programs. Used FL Studio (which I just need to buy the full version; so I need to keep track all the time lol), FamiTracker (8bit NES/Arcade audio beat maker which my friend recommended months ago) which is great; but it takes awhile to make something worth while. Lots of process deciding which note works for what part in the rhythm or just going nuts with it. Also older demos using my mic, synthesizer programs, and other tools.
Here is the link for you to try out in the near future.
I recommend Game Maker 8 Pro or a basic version if you want to start playing around with making game demos, Unreal Development Kit, and others out there online. Takes alot of time; but there are things you can do in a short period of time though.
Oh you'll love MvC. Lots of fun; but AI is tough even for a classic fighter. Ooh..I love a good brawler especially the ones you said. Haven't played a good TMNT game in forever and another recommendation is the Simpsons arcade game too. Since you have a Wii U, I highly recommend taking advantage of their Virtual Console service where you can buy lots of retro/classic games for a good deal. Even stuff outside of Nintendo's publishing. Streets of Rage..been awhile since I picked that up to play with a friend. Good titles.

I've heard of Unity3D, and it sounds awesome, but I struggled making a 2D game in Stencyl so doubt I'll be knocking out any 3D games in the near future Game Maker is apparently quite a lot easier to use than Stencyl so I'll give that a try next as I'm just wanting to do some basic platforming demos with my own sprites and for my own enjoyment.

I remember playing the Simpsons Arcade game back in the day on a real arcade, terrific game but I wasn't aware that it was available on home consoles?
I only have the regular Wii (not WiiU) but I hacked it years ago to run it as an emulator Instead of buying the retro games through the Virtual Console (which I found lacked a lot of games I wanted, at the time anyway) I installed my own C64/NES/SNES/SMS/Genesis emulators through the Homebrew Channel and have the entire games catalogs for every console on a single SD card. If Simpsons was ported to one of those consoles I probably already have it available to play on my Wii, I'll just need to find it lol. If you have an old Wii take a look at http://www.wiihacks.com as I just followed a tutorial there on how to get it up and running. Would have binned the Wii a long time ago if it weren't for the fact that it's now loaded with 10000+ retro titles Xbox and PS3 can probably be hacked too but I don't own either of those

Re: The Indie/Retro Video Games Thread
Sounds like a good idea to give the Game Maker concept a go. Have fun and enjoy making stuff. Yeah..my bro actually has the Homebrew Channel on his Wii that I sometimes play at his house or when he brings it over to play Smash Bros or other games at parties. He modded his version of Brawl to have the Song Remains the Same to play in the background. Led Zeppelin logo designed over the Smash ball, Captain Falcon as Master Chief, and so many cool additions. He has mods for Cat Mario and a bunch of classic games on his console data and his computer. Glad you went with the Homebrew, excellent decision. I don't own a Wii; but I play it when my friends have it around and they have a copy on campus that I would play here & there.

Re: The Indie/Retro Video Games Thread
Oh yeah I've seen this game being played in various Youtube channels I follow. It looks pretty cool and I heard some of the soundtrack and thought it was badass and retro. Glad to hear more praise about it.
Re: The Indie/Retro Video Games Thread
This is one of my favourite games of all time
That one takes me back. I remember looking at the pictures of Flashback in a Sega magazine back in the day and just being blown away by how good it looked. I've never actually played it, and whilst the 3D animations in the video look worthy of me playing the game I just know I'd waste hours upon hours aimlessly wandering around that first jungle level It definitely looks like you'd need a walkthrough guide to complete it, as was the case with most old games really, but that was part of their charm.
I'll check out the Hotline Miami videos tomorrow, going to get an hours work done on Evo tonight
