Re: Donald Trump running for President
What do you think, does he have a shot? Would you want it?
Me I hope it happens just for the entertainment, though Hillary can probably provide that as well.
With how the rest of the field looks I think he can take the nomination at least.
Re: Donald Trump running for President
Not an American, but given how the rest of the western world is impacted by your elections and that I have a lot of American friends I feel like I should share my opinion anyway .
I hope he gets the nomination, not because I think he's a good candidate (I don't, I think he's too dumb and too volatile), but because he's not funding his campaign with interest group money. I think it's unlikely though, and expect the vast majority of the 75% of Republican voters that don't currently support him to coalesce around a more sane candidate as the field whittles down.
I'm naively hoping for Trump vs. Sanders, with Sanders taking the presidency. Sanders has the same advantage as Trump, in that he's also not taking money from interest groups, but he's intelligent and dependable to boot. Plus (being European and all) I don't think electing a socialist democrat will kill your economy and it is time the American people get a president that actually represents their needs.
Re: Donald Trump running for President
Only in America can a guy campaign on being rich, contempt for women, contempt for people of different ethnicity, lie half the time outrageously and even say low minimum wage is a good thing make anyone take you seriously. He's even outright pro bombing half the middle east for oil, but apparently being honest about it gets him plus points? It's beyond parody level.
I'll leave the thread now before I get called a socialist for thinking some Americans are batshit crazy .

Re: Donald Trump running for President
I like him for only two reasons which Mole brings up....
He cant be bought off and he speaks his mind. Other than that, in a normal world he isn't electable and shouldn't be within a light year of the presidency. Having said that, the world isn't normal. I said that when this country elected Obama it was a game changer because it just showed we will literally elect anything with a pulse. Also factor in the trash culture we live in, Trump is what we deserve. Our leaders are a mirror of us to a certain extent. We deserved Obama in 08. We deserve Trump in 16.
The thing he has going for him is the pack running on both sides is literally the worst we have ever seen. He might sneak into the Oval Office by default. Like BLS, I wish an independent could somehow jump into the race and build momentum. The corporations are going to have to hedge their bets somehow and getting an independent in there with real ideas might be the way to do it. I think its getting a little late for new faces to jump in though.
The country desperately needs a Reagan type leader to try and get us out of the mess we are in. There isn't one.
Re: Donald Trump running for President
I'll write a lil more later, but to be quick, I heard something said that Trump really isn't going to win. Currently he has about 20-25% of the GOP voters. However as other candidates drop out, those voters won't be ones going to Trump, if so they would have gone already. So they'll stick with the more conventional pols who are still in it (Jeb, Rubio, etc). So the others staying in it will grow to 20, 30, 50% whereas Trump will remain in the 20-30 percentile. When it's down to 2 or 3 candidates one of them will likely reach the 50% mark, forcing Trump to eventually bow out or just lose it overall.
Seems logical at least. OTOH you never do know. I get your Obama comparison James, but in the 2008 Dem primary Obama slowly did win over voters. I don't see Trump doing that.
Re: Donald Trump running for President
Since I have been wrong in every election from I started following with Gore/Bush, it's not looking good for Trump.
What makes me think he can do it is recent elections in Europe with a rise in right wing parties. They get no support in the media or from the establishment, yet pull relatively large amount of votes compared to previous years. Sweden a brand new party who's only policy is immigration got 13% of votes. Now they're polling at 25, biggest in the country. And Sweden is as liberal as they come with complete support from the media.
It's getting to the point where people are not just sick of the bullshit, but are starting to think this just isn't good enough. And that's when they start throwing their lot with something, anything. You know with Trump you are going to get something different. Might be bad, might be alright. But rather that than another boring suit with the same failed promises, the same lies, the same political correctness.
