Re: Nancy Reagan dead at 94

Former first lady Nancy Reagan, the indispensable partner and protector of the nation's 40th president who became a fierce advocate in the fight against the disease that stole him from her, has died, the Reagan Library announced on Sunday. She was 94.

"Her romance with Ronald Reagan was a storybook love story," said historian Douglas Brinkley, editor of The Reagan Diaries. "She is the one who deserves credit for orchestrating the great legacy that is Ronald Reagan."

"She was a true partner to the presidency,'' Anita McBride, a chief of staff to former first lady Laura Bush, said in an interview Sunday with CNN.

Nancy Reagan often said, "My life didn't really begin until I met Ronnie." She will be buried beside him on a hilltop at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California. There, at the president's funeral in June 2004, much of the world watched the tearful widow lean over his coffin to say farewell as the sun set over Simi Valley.

Gone was the so-called 'dragon lady' whom her press secretary, Sheila Tate, said could make the most powerful White House aide shake with fear. Nearly forgotten were the closets of designer gowns and cabinets of expensive china that she preferred, and for which she was criticized. Even her unblinking gaze of connubial adoration -- The Gaze, reporters called it -- that so annoyed feminists seemed forgiven.

The 80s loses another icon....

Definitely one of the greats. The 1980s are not the 1980s we know without the Reagans.

I know many laughed about her "Just Say No" to drugs campaign. Being clean after 20+ years of drug use, I no longer laugh.

It's funny, I love how the republican candidates use Reagan every chance they get to prop themselves up, but if he ran today, they would run him down as being a false conservative RHINO. He would not get the nomination today. Nancy actually encouraged him bringing democrats into his circle, to compromise, and not make an enemy out of Tip O'Neil. That is sacrilege today. Especially Cruz who is vowing to do the exact opposite of that. And Rubio needs to stop evoking the Reagan name, Rubio is no Ronald Reagan. He doesn't have the balls, backbone or diplomacy to be mentioned in the same sentence as Reagan.

I wasn't a Reaganite, but at least they weren't fraudsters like the clownshow today.

RIP Nancy.

Reagan was also originally a democrat. Reagan was no partisan hack. He wanted to work with both sides. He truly loved this country and was proud of it. Without Reagan,  the Cold War may never have ended or even if it did, not at that point in time. People on both sides(and independents) loved him. He will forever be the only president to win an election with a 49 state landslide.

You're right...he wouldn't even fit into the party of today and they'd mock him. He would also be fucked over by many politicians on both sides. I actually think in today's world he'd get more dem votes than republicans. reagan believed in tax cuts that's for sure but I guarantee he would immediately end those permanent tax cuts for the rich...something Obama promised to do 8 years ago but continually renews. Reagan is known as a major tax cutter(rightfully so) but he also increased taxes at key moments to continue economic growth and revenue. He may have been an old man but he certainly knew what he was doing. He had great advisers(especially that first term) and had his pulse on the FED as he needed to.
Had he not had to spend so much money on defense to build a super massive deterrent to the Soviets, we may have been running surpluses. He had his faults but I think even those who didn't like him admit he is one of the greats.

I agree with you that they need to stop using his name to promote themselves. I'll never forget when Pat Buchanan(I'm a huge fan of Pat) said Palin might be the next Reagan. 14

There will never be another Ronald Reagan.

The story of their relationship is great. Many mocked her during the 80s but she really helped him during that time.

I've read many Reagan books but not an actual Nancy biography. I'm going to check Amazon for one.

I agree with you about this.  Look at the heroin epidemic out there today.  Granted, alots contributed to that, and in large part the pharmacueticals desire to push oxy, percs, & vicoden etc out there onto everyone.  However I think a laissez faire approach to drugs leads to something like that. A slippery slope.  While I do want marijuana to finally be legalized, I do think the government & oversight is best with a zero tolerance approach, at least to the youth.  Same think with DUI, it needs to be "imapairment starts with the first drink".   Granted, alot of people will still have 3 or 4 drinks, but the governement oversight should be zero.  Same with texting & driving.

RIP, I'm sure alot of liberals will have a field day with this, but she seemed like a decent enough person.

Gotcha.  I was more referring to liberals on Facebook & twitter.  Just like rando's, not like real people in the media & political world.
