Abba reunite for first public performance in 30 years
The four members of Abba performed alongside one another for the first time in over 30 years in Stockholm this weekend.
On Sunday, at a private gala to mark 50 years since songwriting duo Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson met for the first time, the pair were joined by Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstadon stage at Berns Salonger in Stockholm. As well as discussing their career, the group sang their 1980 hit Me and I, according to Swedish newspaper Expressen – an event many fans never foresaw happening.
The impromptu performance reportedly began when Lyngstad and Fältskog recited the track as a tribute to Andersson and Ulvaeus, before the other half of Abba joined in and made the reunion official. Footage of the performance hasn’t yet surfaced, but images appeared on social media.
Although the group’s last tour took place in 1982, the four-piece were last publicly seen together in Stockholm for the opening of a new entertainment venture, Mamma Mia! The Party.
Despite their occasional individual performances, the group – made up of two former married couples – decided they would not reunite for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. “Agnetha is not flying, so I don’t know how she’s going to get to New York,” Andersson told Rolling Stone at the time.
Speaking to Expressen, Lyngstad said of their 2016 reunion: “It was absolutely amazing. A lot of emotions.
“We’ve made this journey throughout our history. Benny and Björn in particular. It’s been very nostalgic.”
“We took a break in ‘82, and it was meant to be a break,” Ulvaeus said in 2014. “It’s still a break and will remain so. You’ll never see us on stage again.”

Never really cared about this band but this is indeed a shocker. The GNR reunion showed that anything is possible at this point and then also take into consideration no one is getting any younger. They had always said it would never happen but why not just go ahead and do it. You only live once.
After GNR and ABBA, not many reunions are left unfortunately. The most unlikely reunion left is probably Elastica and there aren't enough people out there begging for it. While very famous during that Britpop wave of Oasis, Blur,etc. and Elastica actually had more success in the US at the time than those other bands....but they crashed and burned very quickly and nothing kept them in the public eye over the years. The current generation probably doesn't even know they ever existed.
What else is left? Savage Garden?
edit: Another iconic reunion might be Sly and the Family Stone but this happened briefly years ago.

Oasis perhaps, although they only split up about 6 years ago so whilst it would be big news not a shock reunion.

Wait a minute....was Savage Garden only famous in the US? Interesting.
I am also shocked that this ABBA news died on the vine so quickly. IMO this reunion wasn't as anticipated as people thought for decades. Also take into account most of their original fans are either in their 60s-70s or dead.
ELO is getting back together but that happened before so its not really news.
The real Dokken is reuniting for a few dates in Japan this year but since its such a limited run overseas, even the rock world isn't talking about this one.

Yeah i'm kinda shocked about the ABBA news dying so quickly as well. 15 years ago, I think this would've been mainstream news.
They just waited too long. Had GN'R waited 'til around 2020, it would've been too late as well.
Even some of the diehards around here have noted how 'old' it seems the GN'R crowd is skewing. Although there are some new fans seeing it for the first time around, the reality is the majority of even their 'younger' fans probably skew to the early 30's or older. The majority of those fans are in the 40's, 50's, and probably even older.
ABBA's fan base is about 10 years older. So couple that in. So yeah, they are either in their 70's or dead.
ABBA just waited too long. No one caring in the U.S., I get. But ABBA was one of the biggest musical acts of all-time internationally.
As for Dokken, the rock world actually has been talking about the Dokken thing, or at least the Eddie Trunk/Glam Metal-circles. Problem is Don Dokken has toured his version of Axl's New GN'R for so many years with "Wild" Mick Brown on drums (Don's 'Dizzy Reed') that most people have just gotten accustomed to original guitarist George Lynch being in Lynch Mob (yes, they still tour), and bassist Jeff Pilsson has had GREAT success as a replacement player/co-writer in Foreigner.
Don held out for years for a certain price, and although everyone dropped the news way early, Don didn't even confirm the reunion until last Saturday night. Don also made it clear there would be no U.S. tour, or European festival shows.
They're gonna do 6 shows in Japan, and possibly a warm-up gig/DVD up at Badlands Pawn in South Dakota, and that's it.
Don & George have hated each others guts since the early 80's when the band started, and they still bicker. But basically Don got an offer that was like more money than any four of them would make in 5 years worth of touring. Including Pilsson with Foreigner.
It was just too lucrative to pass up.
It's always been sad about Dokken. They were one of the unique, one-of-a-kind glam metal bands to come out of LA during that period, along with Ratt.

Wait a minute....was Savage Garden only famous in the US? Interesting.
We do know who they are, but it's just one of hundreds of bands who had a hit. I'd be surprised if more than a 1000 people our side of the pond would care if they came back. I'd put them in the same category as the band Train.

Indeed. Can't even remember what their hit song was... There were so many of those 1 hit song bands back then...
They are nowhere in the same range as reunited Gn'R or reunited Abba.

As to why it's NOT major news:
The event was a private gala, with a selected limited audience.
They didn't advertize the "reunion" beforehand.
There is no reunion, it was only a one off performance.
