Re: Tracks missing from the leaked CD's
I was gone for a couple years here. Is it me or was The General a huge letdown? I recall alot of hype behind that one. Seems its going for an Estranged concept, but pretty big swing and miss if you ask me.
I think it's a great song at its core. Definitely a big gun. Perhaps not as epic as we were lead to believe, but fantastic nonetheless. Axl sounds amazing on the chorus. CD in general lacks good choruses (all these unintentional puns!).
What I don't like about it is the production. That hip hop drum or whatever that drones on in the background sounds terrible to me. Feels like you are playing a scratched record almost. And it gets worse as the song progresses. You get sort of used to it, but it would have been better with a more rock n roll beat.

Yes, same here. I was expecting a more complex concept with more structure and something really epic. I remember someone saying in the past that TG had AN opera section with some opera singer collaboration.
The song is a mesh for me. Bad mix, Axl voice without any rasp at the end sounds horrible. The only good thing the Slash solo at the end. Just my opinion.

We already have half album CD 2 ... For me it's far worse than chinese democracy.
Chinese, Better, CITR, TWAT, street of dreams, Prostitute, Shacklers, This i love... All of them much better than any of the singles we have from cd2

Completely agree. I wish the current band would do Shackler’s and Riad in particular because they are actual uptempo rock songs.
Edit: maybe the Big Guns are Village leaks like Seven and others but I doubt it based on The General.

Ides of March is Circus Maximus
'Ides of March' was a working title of one of the songs that came from a loop name that Dizzy came up with: I think they kept the name, but it's been years so I'm sure everything has changed by now." (Dave Dominguez, Sp1at, 02/07/05)
To quote Wasted regarding circus maximus"Would you say this has a Dizzy Loop on it?"
Yeah .. I doubt Ides of March is Nothing. Seems like a huge stretch.
On the other hand, they seemed to have a fetish for constantly changing working titles...and if there was a brief attempt at sticking to a particular theme, it's possible Ides and Circus were two different songs.
How the hell does Oklahoma morph into Berlin? What's the connection?
Look at Seven.... God only knows what that really is. Devious Bastards has a clip of the Mercury 7 astronauts.
Coincidence? Did they scrap this song.... obviously a Bucket song ...but reuse that clip for Seven?
There's very little rhyme or reason to any of it unfortunately.
I know one thing.....the CD leftovers and the Village leaks show us that just because a song title appears to be epic doesn't make it so...even if described as such eons ago. A song that might have been epic couldn't be because it was simply abandoned/relegated to the "B list".

Huge letdown. Haven't listened to it in a coon's age.
We're lucky they bothered to release it. It's obviously unfinished.
Even if the rest are in a similar state of completion, hopefully we get some of those too.
20 years was long enough.

At one point probably between 99-04 it all made sense, There was actually a plan. Then whatever actually happened which is probably multiple things like Buckethead leaving, The 2002 tour failure, Umg cutting funding everything went out the window and madness of Roy Thomas Baker re recording everything probably feed into Axl Rose quest for perfection.
I believe Merck is responsible for more things going wrong then we will ever know.

Did you ever have any luck locating that 2001 setlist pic with Oklahoma as an alt for Riad? Some on Mygnr have questioned its legitimacy. Hard to have a debate either way with the pic seemingly lost media at this point.

It's lost to history.
A shit ton of GNR stuff is gone.
All that Eat My Silkworms crap
The few CD era studio pics of GNR
Shit tons of emails from Brain, Merck, etc.
No one realized back in the day the importance of archiving all that material. Remember...the internet is forever...or so they said.
By the time sic started archiving CD Whispers, a lot of this stuff was already gone.
