Slash Working on Solo Album, Not Waiting on Velvet Revolver

Filed under: News, Album, ExclusiveWhile media and fans keep speculating on a new singer for Velvet Revolver, Slash isn't waiting around, but rather, keeping busy with solo project. "I'm working on it pretty aggressively right now while I have the time cause as soon as Velvet finds its singer, then it's going to be off the races with that," he tells Spinner. "I'm using this little period to be able to do as much on my solo record as possible. I'm not sure exactly when it will come out, but hopefully it will come out before the Velvet record."
"It'll be my first solo record," he" continues. All the other ones were just me putting other bands together and going out and just jamming. This will actually be a little bit more personal."
Slash was in a bit of a reflective mood when he spoke to Spinner as it was just after he was honored for his sobriety at a MusiCares event in L.A. There, Slash shared the stage with Steven Tyler, who presented him his award, fellow honoree Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick's Robin Zander and Camp Freddy. "When I was 14 years old, I was going to Cheap Trick, Aerosmith and Alice Cooper gigs," he says. "And if you told me, 'In the future, you're going to be jamming with Steven Tyler, Robin Zander and Alice Cooper,' I never would've believed it. That would've been an premise."
Slash recalls listening to Aersomith's 'Rocks,' which shaped his wild partying days. "One song in particular, which really represented who I was at 15, was the song called 'Nobody's Fault,'" he says. "Listening to it now, you can only imagine what a sort of slightly sleazy, bloodthirsty kind of kid that I was."
Like many artists who danced with 'Mr. Brownstone' and its ilk, Slash considers himself fortunate to now be sober and a family man. "The music was great and then to just really put the icing on the cake, you have booze, drugs and sex -- just this total freedom," he says. "But you're teetering on the edge if not dangling by one foot the whole time and you're lucky if you can come out the other end."

So am I, and its pretty obvious that VR is not really a priority, or he would be using his influence to bring the "singer search" to a quick end.
More than likely negotiations with the GNR camp have stalled so he is going solo right now.
Re: Slash Working on Solo Album, Not Waiting on Velvet Revolver
I know I shouldn't probably shouldn't say this since Axl is the complete opposite end of the spectrum and takes an eternity to release anything but I'm concerned if Slash is trying to rush out his solo album before VR find a singer.
Personally I wish the guy would take a bit more time which hopefully will translate into a better quality record. The guy has so much talent but through VR and Snakepit I personally only think we have seen brief glimpses of it. Why the hurry? They didn't listen to Rick Rubin on the last VR album when he told them to keep writing and with hindsight I think they should have.
IMHO he should really take his time to do this right and make it the proper showcase of his talent that it should be. Not just a bashed out record done in 5 mins so he can tick that solo record box off on his resume.
Re: Slash Working on Solo Album, Not Waiting on Velvet Revolver
Yeah, I agree completely. Slash is on top of the world right now, and is a figure in mainstream culture. Whether by himself or with a band.
There's no need to rush anything. The guy could live without a reunion also. He's the only GNR member to truly understand what GNR was all about and to build off that legacy.
Even little kids who've never listened to GNR know who he is. The guy could have a Santana like career for the next couple decades and continue endorsing various products and continue to be relevant, and he'd never have to go back to the AFD well because of lack of ideas/ambition.

I'd like to see him take more time as well. To me the problem with Velvet Revolver was it always felt rushed. They could have done so much better but it's like they were all low on beer money and had to just do the equivalent of flop out a quick burger for a fast buck. Slash is at a point that he can do what he wants now and it is the perfect time for him to do a "real" solo record worthy of his capabilities.

I disagree...I think the rush is simply slash rushing to ensure he has a porject of some kind. Its very obvious from his book that the times he's fallen into life threatening drug use has been during the down periods....and basicly when he has nothing to do the demon comes knocking....
I think the UYI records were recorded pretty fast from the band wern't they - i thought I read the delay was axls vocals mostly. And "Its five o'clock" was a fast album and awesome. I think the 'rushed' feel of VR is more to do with the music lacking cohesive inspiration....like scott didnt seem to like old GNR style at all...
