I normally don't "steal" a thread or post from another site, but some guy at mygnr posted some youtube stats comparing interest in old GNR to new GNR.

HUGE difference. Before someone says, "well, those old songs are twenty years old", just remember that the youtube craze has only existed for a few years.
If you're GNR management, what crosses your mind when you see these types of stats? Before you say it doesn't matter, youtube is one of the biggest sites on the net and is a huge promotional tool. Its also free. There aren't many people looking for new GNR or Chinese Democracy.

I would imagine the fact that the average fan knows the older titles well enough to search for them would come into play as well.
True, but when you search for GNR, everything comes up. You can even click on one video, and an assortment of more GNR vids are available on the right hand side. Even when people see the CD songs on there, they obviously aren't viewing them.
Its been two years since the 06 tour started, and seven years since Rio, and the most the CD lineup can get is 300,000 views.
One other factor that comes into play is how GNR wanted to erase new GNR from youtube back in 07. They only wanted people seeing the old band.
Looks like Axl and Tsunami got their wish.

well i think what james is getting at is that alot of people feel the new material is good enough to top even the old material...these stats show that at this moment that its not even close...also it shows the buzz for the current GnR isnt near what some people wanna believe

Again though, if you're the average fan and you search for GNR, I would think you click on the songs you already know.
I personally don't take these numbers to mean anything bad about the newer version of GNR.
It doesn't reflect anything "bad" about the new lineup, it just shows that there isn't as much interest in this project outside the forums.
For a supposed mythical album, those numbers are pretty low.

The Sisters of Mercy are a very GNR-ish band as far as (non)releases go. The only difference is the comparatively smaller fanbase and lesser public recognizability. The Sisters have toured actively in '06, playing out a mixed bag setlist featuring both old and new material. Should give you an idea.

There's a spike on Suzanne's view count because it was pretty much The Sisters' Harley-Davidson moment, an official live video that took a life of its own. As Youtube's search algorithms are quite semantic, they'll keep you circling a very fixed pool of songs before letting you in on the new material on its own. I had a hard time scavenging the new stuff out from the Sisters search by just lazily searching with a mere band name (go ahead and try). Youtube assumes the old stuff, which has a steadfast audience / a fine average of clicks per month is something it needs to advertise, which means the new stuff by the same name is pretty much laid to waste.
Same goes for most '06-07 live videos from the AFD/UYI-era. They basically squatter a half-life in the network, hiding behind the illustrious big brother. The old stuff also holds a certain pop culture significance in itself, which would be foolish to bypass when considering the differences in views.
To make a more even fight, I'll go for Rock Am Ring '06.

Even though the clicks scatter to alternative versions of each song, the gap is now considerably smaller. Better and The Blues can even take on November Rain.
Which goes on to prove you shouldn't blame a Uno for not being a Ferrari, even though they're both under Fiat.

Live bootlegs and demos of varying quality stacked up against 20 year old classic songs that have been in stores, on radio, and formally released for two decades. James James James, kind of an unfair fight by ANY standard. For arguments sake why not put up Crash Diet by comparison? Or Ain't Going Down? Or let's say Reckless Life?
I still think interest will perk up EXTREMELY quickly once you get a formal single out and an actual record company announced release date. For example, I am a huge Radiohead fan but never go to their chat boards or You tube to look for unreleased material. I just wait for it to come out and I purchase it. Same goes for Wilco and Tool. I will buy their albums when they come out and always go see them play when a concert is in my town. But, I never go to their message boards. A lot of people will come out of the wood work when there is something to care about.
You have to remember, we don't represent the majority, we represent the lunatic fringe of Gnr fans.
ps on the flip side, I do think Axl has killed whatever buzz CD may have had over the past years. People simply don't believe him or anyone when it comes to the release of this record and are over the rumors-even casual fans. The boy who cried wolf syndrome. However, that doesn't mean when the album is actually formally released that people won't care. There is a subtle difference there.
