Re: Are we at comparison time yet? BEST of VR vs. BEST of New GNR Lineup
It was tough to narrow the VR songs down to just 9. I think several songs are as good as Set Me Free including Superhuman, American Man and Dirty Little Thing.
Best VR songs: New GNR songs:
You Got No Right The Blues
Slither Better
Sucker Train Blues Chinese Democracy
Messages Madagascar
The Last Fight Song #2
Fall To Pieces If the World
Set Me Free I.R.S.
Let It Roll TWAT
Just Sixteen Ryaid
What do you guys think? I could have added Silkworms, but it probably won't make the album. I really don't see a big difference one way or another. You Got No Right could be an old school GNR type song. Its really a great tune. You Got No Right and the Blues are two songs that seem old school GNR to me, or at least share common ground. Sucker Train Blues is pretty much an Appetite sounding song but with Weiland's vocals instead of Axl's. I think VR's stuff is just as good as current GNR's and they took a lot less time to create, which isn't part of the question, but still, nothing rocks as hard as Slither and Sucker Train Blues on the new GNR type stuff.

Hmmmm, I changed your VR songs (would add in Pills Demons, For a Brother over some of them) so I'd say:
You Got No Right <<< The Blues
Slither <<< Better
Sucker Train Blues <<< Chinese Democracy
Messages >>> Madagascar
The Last Fight >>> Song #2
Fall To Pieces >>> If the World
For a Brother >>> I.R.S.
Pills Demons etc === TWAT
American Man >>> Ryaid

I'll add my thoughts later, but I must be the only person who thinks that "Messages" totally sucks.

Still blows away Madagascar.
Since everyone else wants to review this like a finished album, its fair game to compare these songs. now.

I think most will agree with the GNR top 3 being Better, The Blues, and Chinese Democracy. Your VR substitutions look good to me. I like all three of those songs.

I'm gonna put my top 9 VR (even if I only like 2) and the 9 GN'R in order, then I'll make the winner of each pair-up bold.
Slither Better
Come On, Come In Chinese Democracy
You Got No Right If the World
Fall to Pieces There Was a Time
She Mine The Blues
American Man Riyadh and the Bedouins
Sucker Train Blues IRS
Messages #2
The Last Fight Madagascar
So GN'R wins 6/9, with Gn'R only have 9 tunes to pick 9 from, and VR having about 30? GN'R is clear winner.

Shit, I forgot Come on Come in! Good one! This is cool to see what everyone thinks.
Re: Are we at comparison time yet? BEST of VR vs. BEST of New GNR Lineup
I think Slither and the main riff is one of the cheesiest rock songs of the decade.....no need for me to be in this thread. However, outside of a few Slash "moments", VR was not my thing at all so I really don't even want to compare. Not that the new Gnr is all that great, but Weiland has always left a very bad taste in my mouth, Kushner is pretty blah, and Duff/Matt just phone in some generic rock sludge.:/

Re: Are we at comparison time yet? BEST of VR vs. BEST of New GNR Lineup
Both fall way short on being great.
Axl on Sucker Train Blues would be awesome. Slash on TWAT would be awesome.
Re: Are we at comparison time yet? BEST of VR vs. BEST of New GNR Lineup
I would like a Slash solo on the Blues , Chinese Democracy (finck's flat thin solo sucks and Bucket's is a little too odd), and Track 2. He would be good on TWAT as well but Finck's is actually very mellow and cool and Bucket slays the ending-sounding very Slashy and Jimmy Page at points. I would want Slash to put down some rhythm on the first part of TWAT actually. Finally, I think Slash would have been much better on the Madagascar guitar parts. Outside of the 2001 Rio live Bucket mindfuck, the guitar parts have gotten worse in my opinion. A great song was ruined by pitchy guitar melodies and a buried, muddy guitar solo. Just as a reminder, watch this and listen to how much smoother and more soulful the guitar parts are.

the whole song is so much more soulful and powerful...you also have background voices singing at the end and not 9 different Axl's...a case where a song got killed in the studio. Rio was Axl's coming out party and this song actually meant something then...you hear the heartache and determination at the same time. And, uhhhh Bucket slays showing you he can play slow when he needs to.
