You're right, but that's his own fault.  As you play the game in the NFL for 16 years you've obviously seen just about everything that can be thrown at you.  You'd THINK he'd be able to make the necessary adjustments and not make as many stupid plays.  I know, that's his game and he's obviously done plenty of good things in his time as one of the 10 best QB's of all time.  I guess that's just who he is and how he plays the game but for an all time great he's sure made some horrible plays along the way.  Again, not to take away anything from the guy.  He's a class act, but I still think it's time for Green Bay to say goodbye to the legend and move on.

I agree, and the reasons you listed are why Favre(or no one) could ever hold Montana's jockstrap. The guy played the last couple years of his career after having had a couple career ending injuries with a mediocre offense and was one game away from the SB. The guy was a genius. He was old(older than Favre), and he still couldn't be stopped. If Bruce Smith doesn't knock him out cold in that 1993 game, Its the Chiefs-Cowboys in the SB.

Montana would have tore that Dallas defense to pieces.

I think Tom Brady would've made a strong case to be compared to Joe Montana IF the Pats could've run the table last season.  But now that debate can be put to rest forever.  As Joe never lost a Super Bowl, and Tom has.  He's still pretty darn good though.

Probably not, but a little Dallas Sucks post never hurt, right? 16

Yeah, there's a standard Montana set, and all fall pretty far from it. While Jim Kelly is my all time fave QB, I'm not even gonna act like he was at Montana's level. Close in some regards, but far away in many others.

Not only does Montana have the rings, he never threw an INT in an SB. A lot of people don't seem to comprehend that, and I consider it basically the best SB stat there is.

Most QBs throw 1, sometimes 2 INTs in the big game. Montana threw zero, and he played in four.

I know I've brought this up many times over the years, but the moment I truly realized Montana was at a level unlike any other was while he played in Kansas City, NOT San Francisco. They were about to play the Oilers and that feared Buddy Ryan defense. In the lead up to the game, members of that defense, and even Buddy Ryan himself, were talking shit about the Chiefs and Montana. Chiefs walked into Houston and Montana single handedly destroyed that defense. It was a disaster on soooooo many levels for Houston(they had major playoff dreams and were talking SB), and the Oilers franchise never recovered from that(and moved to Tennessee a couple years later).

Anyone want to make a pre-pre-season prediction about who'll be the top team? Or who's going to surprise people?

I haven't been paying much attention so I can't really make much of an analysis... but if I had to say something I'd just say the AFC South looks nasty this year.

Offseason has been a fucking snooze fest to me, and I have the NFL Network and it still doesn't make it any better. I'm just glad we're getting a bit of discussion going again, even if we're digging through past glories to do it.

I'll go ahead and make a few predictions....

I think Cleveland will continue moving up the ladder this season. Almost a lock for the playoffs as long as no major disaster happens. Same thing with Minnesota, although like mentioned here many times, they do have issues at QB.

Bears will continue their collapse(sadly), and Lovie Smith may be fired in mid season and then a massive rebuilding will take place. Bears fans will soon feel like its 1993 all over again.

Giants will not repeat, although will surely be a contender in some fashion.

The Romo era will continue to fizzle out and Jerry Jones will question why he bet the farm on the guy when he had no collateral to back it up.

The league will start looking for a new star in the post Favre era.

Bills could move up a few slots and actually compete for the playoffs this year. Whether it can happen in reality or not is the million dollar question.

Pats will not go to the SB, and I think the AFC is going to be a bloodbath similar to the NFC. We may be quite surprised at the teams fighting for contention.

If the NFC/AFC West continue shaming the league, I truly believe the NFL will consider one more realignment.

Something has to be done about that mess.

By division winner:

AFC
NE
Pitt
Jax
SD

Wildcard
Indy
Balt

NFC
Phi
Minn
TB
Ari

WC
Dallas
GB

SB - Indy wins on the road to get to the SB, loses to a hot Minnesota team.

Prediction - NE & Indy take a big steps back this year. Indy gets hot in playoffs.

Sry CC & NYG, I wanted to add the Bills & Gmen, but logistically ran out of room.

Yeah I don't know about the Bills. They have only improved in the offseason, and Lynch and Edwards should be better with a year under their belts (although a sophmore slump from either would destroy the offense). But the AFC is rough. Bills have an easy schedule, the easiest I can ever remember them having, but they know how to blow games like no other team.

Like last year, look at the Denver game and the Cowboys game. Both should have been wins, which would've turned a 7-9 team to a 9-7 team, and possibly would've propped spirits up to the point where they could've gotten to 10 wins. But they always drop a game or two they shouldn't. This year, they'll probably get beat by St. Louis, or Arizona, or Oakland, or KC, and it'll just be too much of a momentum and morale hit to make it to 10-6.

ESPN reports that Brett Favre has asked the Green Bay Packers for his release, three days after a conference call with team officials in which the future Hall of Fame quarterback emphatically expressed his desire to play this season.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Favre formally asked for his contractual release from the Packers in a letter was sent by Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook.

Favre, who will be 39 in October, retired March 6 after a 17-year career.

The Packers issued a release Friday in response to the report.

"Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms. We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion," said the release.

"Brett's press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement. The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team."

A three-time MVP, he leads the league with 442 touchdown passes, 61,655 yards passing and 160 career victories. He started 253 consecutive regular season games, more than any other quarterback in history. Including the playoffs, his streak stands at 275.

Favre has two years left on his contract with the Packers averaging about $12.5 million per season.

A radio report out of Green Bay, on 1250 WSSP, indicates that the Minnesota Vikings have already inquired about the possibility of signing Favre.
