Re: Chinese Democracy "On the schedule"

Bono, I was talking US sales for U2's last release and was just pointing out that they have been outsold in the US multiple times by lots of artists since 2004. Worldwide, Chinese vs New U2, I think Chinese will go toe to toe in sales, probably outsell them on curiosity alone. Chinese needs little promotion really (I mean it has been talked about for 14 years-a new Gnr record that is), and they have already started with Rockband. One single song generated a huge amount of hype worldwide, that was a good move no matter how jaded you are. Now, don't get me wrong, the song better kick a lot of ass or my whole theory goes to hell in a hand basket.  Finally, as I pointed out to you earlier, Interscope will release both records, and I think Iovine is smart enough to figure out how to promote them. Let's leave that to him.

ps this is not a Gnr vs U2 thing, because quite frankly, I love both. Really just talking about the future and nothing to do with the past.

Just because we've been talking about and waiting for CD doesn't mean the rest of the record buying public has been.  I think a lot of people are over-estimating the power of a few people on the internet.  CD selling well is far from a sure thing...that may not have been the case a few years ago, but it is now.

I hear that, but how come every time something happens in the world of GNR, it is all over music sites, newspapers, magazines, etc.? They surely aren't publishing those stories to please a few people on the Internet.

I work at a newspaper and have been in the media industry all my life. Believe me, stories don't get published to appeal to a niche group of people.

If you ask me, it's only because it's an interesting piece of news...something that people will go "oh" to when they hear about it, so it makes the news.  That doesn't mean they'll all be in line at midnight the day the album is released.  The name Guns N' Roses holds weight.  If Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were recoring an album together, it would certainly make the news, but it doesn't mean everyone would rush out to buy it.  It's just an interesting note that will catch people's attention briefly.  The product will have to keep their interest.

I don't quite see the point of predicting the album's commercial failure. Are we supposed to enjoy seeing it released less? Are we supposed to think less of the music because it won't sell (in your opinion)?

I want it out. I don't give a shit if it sells. I think Coldplay sucks. Doesn't matter how successful they are.

Buzz, and that is why I said the first song better be damn good or the house of cards will fall.

What's the point in predicting the album's potential commercial success? Will it make you enjoy seeing  it released more? Really though what's the point then in speculating on anything for that matter. I get people are excited. I'd say be wary of it cause we've seen this song and dance before. What I dont' get is why when people predict it's success it's gravy and when others predict it may tank or not even happen it's pointless. I dont' get upset at people's optimism. Why do people get up set over the "negative" opinion.  Unless of course something deep down allwos you to realize there's probably a good chance that side of the arguement will be right.  I listen to so much music that doens't get any commercial success whatsoever but I dont' give a shit about that either. It has nothing to do with my personal tatse but if we're going to discuss marketing tactics by this band be prepared to deal with the opinion of those who feel it may tank.  It's a two way street.
