Re: Baise Moi
Anyone seen this film? Its a masterpiece. I hated for it to end. I was in a trance. This film is about female sexual rage and how these women inflict violence because of their utter contempt towards society. This film is not hollywood fluff.
Its about a prostitute and some loser chick who lead terrible lives. After both commit a crime(and one is raped), they have a chance encounter. This leads to a quick friendship, and they go on an adventure filled with sex and violence. Its what Thelma and Louise would've been if Hollywood had any balls. This film is pretty much from a female perspective. These two have zero care for life. The interesting thing is, you feel sorry for them even though they are killing innocent people. The actress who plays Manu is very attractive. Sort of a plain Jane arab chick, but is definitely smoking. Just added her other movie to the top of my netflix queue. She is an ex porn star in France, although I am not a porn freak so probably wont ever see her other work.
This film is a semi pornographic film, so its definitely not for prudes. The sex is real, and there are closeup shots of blowjobs, fucking, a cumshot on Manu's ass, etc.
This film is supposedly one of the most controversial films this decade. I can see why.
Great film. I highly recommend it(if you're over 18).
Re: Baise Moi
I thought it empty and wanting. All it really had for me was the shock value. The story was weak and have been told numerous times. Some graphic sex doesn't really change anything.
I suspect it to be the work of an artist craving publicity, in the least subconsciously.
Re: Baise Moi
I thought you would have appreciated the film. Yeah, it covers familiar ground, but does it in a unique way. You are seeing it only from the female perspective.
I agree that the film did seem to be craving some controversy, as the sex shown wasn't really necessary. However, even that you are seeing from a female point of view. It isn't meant to arouse men, but is there to show how these women(and women like them) can use sex in the same way that men can.
Re: Baise Moi
Yeah, saw it. The opening rape scene was pretty disturbing, gave me chills. The rest of the flick seemed too gratuitous for my liking. I had to carry myself through the rest of it, not really much meat to it. Seemed like an oversimplified road-movie striving to be as anti-hollywood as possible (which should never be the goal in and by itself).

I felt the same way when I heard about all the controversy around the movie. I wondered if Despentes had a real talent because all her novels seem to be intended to play with our wild imagination, you know, sexuality with a gross thing to it, fi. It may shock indeed because female characters pretend to act like guys. The movie may seem empty. I felt that way the first time I tried to watch it. It felt so crude & it was like a succession of violence and gross sex. I gave it a second chance though and I have come to like it because it has something desperate & intense in it & because those girls seem to carry a Nemesis for all abused women ... Like a great tragedy, it seems to clean you & you definitely feel different afterwards. From this point of view it has more impact than Thelma & Louise.
^JamesLofton : the two main characters were porn actresses. The girl who plays Manu's friend committed suicide a few years ago. It looks like Rafaela Anderson ( Manu) hasn't appeared in a movie for quite a while & maybe she's over with acting.

Welcome to the forum.
Yeah, I read about her suicide. Pretty fucked up. I watched Raffaela's other film last week. It was really good. It was about her character having a lesbian affair with a married woman. Forgot the name at the moment, but you should check it out. She also wrote a book a few years ago about her experiences in the porn industry. Its only in French at the moment though. She is also supposed to write a book about being abused as a child.
She's very talented. Too bad she has the porn stigma attached to her name. She'll never be taken seriously regardless of what she does. Women who get into that industry should really think the decision through.

First of all : thanx for the welcome
Rafaela is a good actress indeed. This other movie you're talking about seems to be from a French TV series. Not too sure about that, though. I haven't watched it yet but I might take your word on the fact that it is great.
Well, I'm to watch it today for someone uploaded the whole movie on youtube. I'll give you some feedback later !
Re: Baise Moi
Yeah, it was a made for tv movie I think. Still great. TV movies here in the US are usually crap. Luckily the standards are a bit different there though.
The next foreign movie on my list is Funny Games. Hopefully it arrives in the mail on Monday. I'm really looking forward to that.
