Re: Bob Lefsetz: Best Buy Deal confirmed/Azoff response to leaks
As for his street cred. GNR and Axl sold out many years ago when they released the UYI records because that is when they went the commercial road and one could argue they took that road with Lies. So they lost their street cred so long ago that people don't even remember when they really had it. As for being friendly to the online world. Well GNR could be more friendly with their fans period. But like I said in another thread. Axl seems to be able to get away with this so why not do it. His fans keep coming back for more. I'd love to see a band like U2 or any other big bands try to treat their fans like shit the way Axl does. Not sure they would get away with it. Sad but true.
i am sorry but that is ridiculous, there is nothing commercial about UYI, or lies, you're an idiot. "police and niggers/immigrants and faggots", yes you're right! thats something people from all echelons of society can enjoy. and 10 minute songs, 2 hours worth of album, two released at the same time, yeahhhhh that just reeks of commercialisation, i can think of so many illiterate teen-boppers who would have been jumping out their skin to sink their teeth into the complexities of 'coma' or 'estranged', but of cause what am i doing, thinking logically? if anything the UYi albums are less commercial than AFD. but hey, what am i talking about, you read somewhere that the UYI albums aren't as good as AFD, so GNR 'sold out' when making them. christ, some people.
First of all thanks for calling me an idiot and not respecting my opinion. I could go down to your level and insult you and not respect your opinions but I will choose a harder road and respect your opinion and debate in an intelligent way.
One in a million was not commercial but I'm sorry Patience screamed commercial and was made to be radio friendly. Does it make it a bad song? Nope! Never said that but it was still commercial. Just because One in a million couldn't be played on the radio (I used to love her as well) don't mean they didn't use a commercial song to sell the album (which was great by the way).
Never said the UYI records were bad either but that they were commercial. Just because they put 2 hours of music on 2 albums releasedat the same time don't mean it ain't commercial. And it don't mean that all the songs were commercial. NR may have been close to 10 minutes long but it was still some very commercial music. Was it a bad song because of that? Absolutely not! But still commercial. Want other examples of songs on the UYI records that were commercial? How about Don't cry, LALD are two that comes to mind.
As for calling me an idiot for saying that UYI was bad and me thinking that because I read it somewhere. I NEVER said that UYI were bad albums. I will say they were not as good as AFD but I know this may be hard for you to accept but I am entitled to my opinion. That said UYI were very good albums and I did listen to them A LOT! But to me this is when they sold out. Nothing wrong with that. Metallica went commercial with the Black album. Still a good record and good band. Just sold out. Which is normal cause we all wanna make money. So I hope this idiot wasn't to complicated for you to debate without resorting to insults and diminishing your point of views bucko!
Re: Bob Lefsetz: Best Buy Deal confirmed/Azoff response to leaks
hey winkler lets keep the insults to a minimum..thanks
gnr released 13 tracks to radio as singles for the UYI's...its pretty safe to say they were going commercial bigtime...do i care? but it didnt strat @ UYI...it started at AFD...6 tracks released as singles out of 12 and then another 5 of the afd tracks released as bsides and singles..thats just insane!
In my mind Lies was the least commercial of all the disks GnR released so i disagree with gnrfraxl there
Like I said in my previous post. It is when they were paving the road to becoming commercial. Remember Patience?
And thanks for sticking up Neemo. I responded without stooping to insults.
Re: Bob Lefsetz: Best Buy Deal confirmed/Azoff response to leaks
regardless....gnr was bred by geffen to be a sellout...end of story
this whole business of $la$h vs Axl and their integrity of selling out and playing for media attention is bizarre to me...gnr was born out of controversy...the more headlines they got (bad or good) just made them more appealing to the kids of the time
they were cash cows for geffen and geffen knew it..and it doesnt matter what axl does to the fans or the media...or if he stays silent or if he udates us every day...he still has that allure and charisma for the people to always want to read more about him...axl is an enigma of the rock world if he ever come out with a biography it'll sell huge
@ captain winkler its great to h ave you aboard you have some great insights and opinions and your posts are great to read...just need to have a bit of tact in responding to posts you dont agree with...its possible to respond to a post you disagree with without resorting to insults thats one of the things this board is about

Neemo's right, if you wanna get critical you could easily say GNR went commercial right from the start. SCOM, what's more radio friendly then that? I don't really get the point, as gnfnraxl said, the main reason people get into the music business is for the love of music and ultimately they'd like to make money. I don't know how many bands are out there that TRY to create music that nobody but a hardcore group of fans are going to like. Even bands like GWAR have cult followings and have carved out a niche for themselves in the industry. They "sold out" in a sense and you never hear them on the radio.

^^
You beat me to it.
Every band that signs a major record contract sells out the moment the ink hits the paper. So the whole *insert band name here* sold out at such and such point in their career is totally lame and untrue. They become a corperate entity the moment they sign a contract and their music becomes a business. And they all know this full well.

Re: Bob Lefsetz: Best Buy Deal confirmed/Azoff response to leaks
(quoting Bob Lefsetz)Of all the marketing/distribution ideas I received in response to my missive, I'll only reveal one, that upon the album's release, Axl Rose should commit suicide.
Not even.
that's completely FUCKED.
Not funny, not cool, not necessary.
No one should even kiddingly suggest anything of the sort for anyone. Even mindless manufactured pop stars like Ashlee Simpson. And especially not Axl.
Bob Lefsetz is a consummate idiot.

In a sense that is true. But what I mean is that sometimes a said band makes a record or a few records and then completely changes and make more radio friendly music much like Metallica did. And you know it's because the band wants to make more money which is fine. Of course GNR 'sold out' the minute they signed a record deal. But it became more apparent with the UYI records. As long as the quality of the music doesn't suffer too much from it see Metallica Load and Reload.
Re: Bob Lefsetz: Best Buy Deal confirmed/Azoff response to leaks
Some people could view the UYI's as "selling out" with the lavish stage setup, releasing 2 albums at once, having orchestral arrangements, backup singers, keyboards, a harmonica player, a huge tour. Or you could view that as evolving and growing as a band. Axl and the other guys had a vision when they began GNR, while they ultimately went down Axl's path moreso, I think everyone involved wouldn't argue that they never wanted to become "the most dangerous band in the world". They accomplished what they set out to do and more, in a short time. So I don't know if they would agree that they ever "sold out". You could argue their accomplishments are negated because they couldn't stay together, but a few of the guys might not be with us today if the band continued on. They appeared to have run their course.
Re: Bob Lefsetz: Best Buy Deal confirmed/Azoff response to leaks
I was told tonight inside Minneapolis' flagship Best Buy that they would have the exclusive release of Chinese Democracy. I was also informed that it wouldn't be forever exclusive, as other stores would be able to carry it after a few weeks. I wasn't given a date, but I'm assuming it's going to be November 25th. The department manager knew exactly what he was talking about and it didn't seem to be any gaurded secret.

Thank you for posting this James. We must all be grasping for straws, if a metal sludge gossip board post travels through the GNR community like wildfires do S. CA hills. Until this is reported by a more legitimate news source, I consider this a regurgitated rumor. I am sure the guy working the counter at Best Buy read it here, and then acted like an insider when working--the hero of the day. I highly doubt that the never ending negotiations are actually complete.
