Re: If a reunion took place - how would you like to see it?
Hey Folks,
As ever i've been seeing a lot of reunion posts around the place...some finding their way into modern GNR topics and thus angering people...so please forgive me for starting another reunion thread...but i've been thinking about something.
A lot of people have talked about a reunion show - or handful of shows - and if that goes well then maybe a full tour until it implodes again. Now on one hand - i can see this being easy to get the guys back for - like if you are Slash or Duff - agreeing to do an isolated show means you have the potential for a lot of fun - and if Axl doesn't show up or things go bad you limit your downside to simply those days - and don't get involved in the greater politics side of things. But I also think shows are perhaps some of the stressing factors....from Slash's book its pretty clear that a big part of what pissed him off was the going on late/canceling shows issue.
So i've been wondering about a reunion recording. Now I know that sounds crazy. Like if Axl hasn't put out a record in 14 years how will starting over help. But some of why he hasn't seems to have been adjusting the music a lot. I think merk did say at one stage there were a few songs waiting on vocals...but songs likeTWAT and IRS...it's not the vocals that change in the leaks its the rest of the parts.
Now i'm not proposing taking bucket off stuff like TWAT and adding the old band..but i'm saying surely somewhere theres a batch of "unfinished" songs - less finished than the demos we have - something that just wasn't quite right at the time with that lineup or whatever and just general song ideas that Axl could harvest and bring back into the fold....
Meanwhile duff and Izzy are always good for songwriting. And Slash mentioned in the doco about the new Alice cooper song he plays on "Vengence is Mine" that he recored that (pretty badass) solo in an hour!!
They don't even have to be in the same room to make it happen. So much less likely to fight. Granted...theres some issues..like musicalluy they'd have to be on the same page..and axl wouldn't be able to do stuff like get Huge to redo slash's parts again and stuff like that...but overall i feel like..hink...like yes...it was painful to get out UYI and all that...but I also kind of feel that in the right circumstances (particualrly if Slash and Co were working around an already existing lyrical idea...that a some new GNR tracks could happen reasonably painlessly....
Don't get me wrong...i'd love to see them share a stage too. But there's plenty of footage out there of peformances...but only so many songs...i'd love a new record more than a tour at this stage.
Re: If a reunion took place - how would you like to see it?
I've said for a long time I'd like to hear proper versions of some of the old Illusion or Appetite era demos that most of us have. I don't think they'd do it, my guess would be they would say "We didn't think they were good enough then, why would they be good enough now?" But it's something I'd like to hear.
As far as the "They don't even have to be in the same room to make it happen." that you mentioned, I would hope to hell they wouldn't do something like that. It's just asking for things to sound stale and uninspired, but it wouldn't surprise me if it happens some day. Parts of songs just getting e-mailed around the country, and members never even "reuniting" to make a song, just having all thier parts on it.

In theory i sort of agree, although it does sound like parts of UYI were recorded the same kind of way...with Axl doing the vocals at a far later stage. It depends to me...like on one hand the chemestry is important...but on the other..maybe Axl is inspired by the way slash plays guitar but not by the way he smokes and hangs out, and likewise maybe slash could be inspired by Axl's melodies and lyrics but gets so over his mood changes and the like that nothing gets done. I'm just saying I can see a world where musicly they could still bounce off each other creatively while minimising personality conflicts...as that Slash/Alice song really impressed me...show's that slash is capiable of adding something cool to really "make" a song without necessarily being around in its formative stages and in a short period of time.

Totally get what you're saying, but in the case of the Alice song, I assume (obviously, I don't know this for a fact) Slash walked into a studio, and laid down a solo on a finished track. I'd rather see colaboration on the writing process, rather than "here's my song, put something on it". I think Izzy Duff and Slash deserve a lot more credit for the arrangement of Illusion era songs than they tend to get. When Axl says "thanks for the melodys" to Slash in Estranged, that should be a writing credit, because those melodies help make that song. The song would have had to have been arranged to make them fit like they did. You couldn't have just dropped any solo into an otherwise finished song and had it turn out as great as it did.
Re: If a reunion took place - how would you like to see it?
If a reunion happens, I'd like to see it limited in scope. At least the first phase. That way it truly is magical and has no chance of losing steam. Its also a way for them to gauge the global response to it.
New York
Los Angeles
Chicago
San Francisco
Houston
Miami
London
Paris
Tokyo
Sydney
Rio
Then STOP. Take a breather and not just gauge reaction, but also how they feel amongst themselves. Can they sustain a massive tour? Any creative sparks that would warrant a new record? Doing a limited tour would also lessen the chance of an implosion. I think the band could pull off those dates with Adler on a crack binge.

What James said.
I'd also like to see a reunion of the 1991 touring/UYI-studio lineup. Axl, Slash, Duff, Izzy, Matt & Dizzy.
With Adler's issues at this point... I have no interest in a classic/AFD-reunion. None.
