Re: Slash's Version Of The Bands Break-Up

Axl Quit GNR To Gain Control of Guns N' Roses

One of the big revelations in Slash's new autobiography is how the original Guns N' Roses split up and Axl Rose gained control of the group and name. Slash also delivers bad news for those that have been hoping that the original line-up would somehow regroup, it's not going to happen.

Slash writes of the possibility of a reunion: "It's funny, when fans ask me, as they do almost every day, whether Guns, in its original form, will ever reunite, it is hard to take them seriously. That question is so asinine to me; if they knew the real story, they'd already know the answer. But my response is always the same: 'Take a look at what everyone is doing now. Duff and Matt and I are part of a really successful band. Izzy's content doing his thing; Steven too. And Axl is touring with the "new Guns." No one is making phone calls to see when we can get the band together again.'"

Just how did that "new Guns" come about? It started when Axl and the band's manager had the other members of the band sign a contract that gave Axl control of the group name if they ever broke up. And that's exactly what Axl did, he broke the group up. Slash writes that the break up was caused by "Axl wanting control to the point that the rest of us were strangled." Then on August 31, 1995 Axl dropped a bomb on Duff and Slash, the only remaining members at the time, when sent them a letter "saying he was leaving the band and taking the name with him under the terms of the contract." Of course, Slash and Duff were invited to still be part of Axl's band, but you'll have to read to book to learn more about how that worked out.

No matter what one thinks of Steven (addict, whiner, liar) ....From a Band Dynamic he was a polar opposite to the mercurial front man, easygoing straightforward... the counter point of the original band sound...It is no wonder he does not get along with Ax they are just too different in the way they approach people, places and things...HE is still a great drummer, he could be a part of some great projects if he could escape his circular PTS thinking on Guns and Roses.....

I think Slash has just permanently shut the door on a reunion. Looks like he is content to continue building on his post GNR resume.

I'm not saying this as some kinda Axl nutswinger, but Slash has always given me the opinion that he'd not be the kind to limit himself what he does for money and/or PR.

There are too many examples were Slash has been overexposed by doing too many guest appearances on TV shows or albums from places that he really should stay away from.

So if Axl ever changed his mind because he would be the key, I seriously doubt Slash would hesitate for too long, although maybe not at the expense of VRs demise...

I always got the impression Slash was never into doing a reunion.

That's not to say if Axl was ever to ask him he might mull it over but ultimately, I don't think he'd do it because of how many times he said in the press that it just won't happen.

Since that was not an exerpt, but an article with quotes, it could be out of context. Nothing from that makes me think a re-union is any more or less likely.

Slash has never been "overexposed". The media loves him, and so do fans of many different musical genres. He is one of the most respected guitarists of the past 30 years. There has never been any sort of backlash against Slash.

I have been predicting a reunion eventually for quite some time, but I seriously think Slash just ruled it out permanently. I don't blame him. Why reunite with someone obsessed with you, and who has spent years slandering him? He still has his integrity intact.

We could literally see a scenario where a reunion happens at some point, yet its a mix of old members and CD era members.

Slash sounds like he is done with the mess. Earlier this year, he had put another nail in the coffin by saying he had completely moved on from that part of his life and had no interest in living in the past. He's starting to sound like Chris Cornell. Content to continue building his career without looking back at past accomplishments. Another nail was an interview a couple years ago where Slash said he would have been interested if all old members went there separate ways and did solo projects and eventually restarted GNR in the future, but Axl went and tarnished the name permanently.

My reunion theories have now officially come to an end.

1987-93 era GNR is officially dead and its not coming back. I'm actually glad Slash is taking this approach and letting the fanbase know.

Axl cannot be happy with these comments. The value of the GNR name has just dropped substantially.
