Re: Fans...
I think this album will attract new fans to GNR, no doubt. But, how many old fans will it (GNR) lose after hearing this album. What if they just don't care anymore and after the latest lineup departures don't want to even go to the shows anymore? Basically is GNR losing some of its base? I know its too early to tell, but odds are a lot of the fans that helped make GNR famous won't be around anymore as they no longer view this band as "their" band. I too find myself wondering if the GNR name wasn't on this album if I would even give a fuck about it. Axl could have just gone the Ozzy route and always had GNR as his Black Sabbath. I am trying to see a happy ending here with Axl and this current line up. Other than one good album, which is the most important thing, I don't see it ending well. I can't beleive I am even asking this. Led Zep never lost its base. The Stones, AC/DC, still the same core fans... But GNR? Axl's own apathy so far to his own album is turning me off.
Re: Fans...
I'm not sure I agree. I saw a tremendous amount of enthusiasm at Best Buy today from fans of Axl and the current lineup, as well as those who haven't heard a single GNR song since the Illusion albums. As you say, time will tell.
Me, I'm optimistic. The more pressing questions I have concern fan expectations from here on out (who is in the band? Will new fans be sad to realize no Bucket, no Robin, etc.? What comes next? How long will it be before we hear from the band again?).
As far as Axl, I'm not sure I can use the word "apathetic" when the man has put 17 years into getting this album out. I'm not sure I'd want to do much press at this moment either, but rather let the music stand on it's own. Enough distractions, you know?

Re: Fans...
I think people who are likely to be turned off will have already left due to the wait, the absence of slash, and the strange appearance of the 02 line up and other factors.
Although...in terms of maxamising the brand...I can see the logic that risky projects like this one could have been done under another name - thus protecting the brand to have a reunion before retirement to full effect. But that just shows Axl is doing this his way for his own reasons and not to a script or for $ alone.

Yes, in my old fans line, that includes the ones that have been with us since 2002 too, but with bucket gone, do we lose them too. I agree with your thing about the press. Good point.
