I think you have summed it up Tommie.
His loose and youthful energetic style of drumming really appealed to me.
Unfortunately as a person he has never been able to sort his shit out. Consequently he cops the easy jibes about living in the past, not moving on etc etc.
I certaintly don't hate him and in fact I think he is the best GN'R drummer - not maybe the most technically correct, but that isn't everything. It's the vibe and the feel etc. But the guy has done himself no favours to endear himself to fans (or his exband mates) since he left GN'R, simply by the lifestyle he leads.

He's certainly not youthful now!
At the time there was something fun about him - he was just like a naiive kid having fun living his dream.
I didn't even notice Ferrer at the 3 concerts I went to. He was simply a homogenous drummer to me.

Like Tommie said, people don't despise Adler. They despise what he became. He could have had a great post GNR career but he threw it all away. I will always respect what he brought to GNR. Like Izzy said, nothing worked when he left. Then Izzy leaves, and the output of music came to a screeching halt.
The band imploded after losing its two lesser known members.

I don't know why this guy is hated on so much. But his drumming is absolutely amazing.
All the drummers on CD combined don't come anywhere near the drumming he does on Appetite.
So let me ask
Why do the majority of fans hate Adler?
I don't hate Adler, but he is at the bottom drumming TALENT wise as far as every drummer any form of GNR has had since goes.
He doesn't suck, but he was they guy they knew/liked that could play when the band got together.
It's actually in Slash's book (and I think I read it somewhere else as well) that Adler's style was basically formed when Izzy and Duff hid a bunch of his drums when he left to go to the bathroom and made him play with what he had left. So they're almost as responsible for his sound as he it.
They have since been able to hire people with more talent.
Also, as has been said many times before this, he pretty much turned into a joke.

I consider Steven the best GN'R drummer,but as has been stated by others,he could never get his shit together,and that's kind of sad if you really think about it.
