Re: Steven Adler OWNS all new GNR drummers
He's certainly not youthful now!
At the time there was something fun about him - he was just like a naiive kid having fun living his dream.
I didn't even notice Ferrer at the 3 concerts I went to. He was simply a homogenous drummer to me.
This is so true. Steven back in the day definitely had a smile on his face alot [probably because he was wasted] but still, you can't deny his presence at all. He worked with the audience and was charasmatic. It's hard to compare any members of GNR now to the older members because to me it's apples and oranges.
I surely hope that Dr. Drew can help him. Watching Celebrity rehab really lets you see just how sick Steven is. His mother gave him up at birth, she gave him to his grandmother to bring up. That alone can do so much damage to a kid and not to mention that when he finally did go live with her, she didn't want him there and packed his bags and put them on the front lawn. That's why he's so addicted, he started really early and just fell deeper and deeper into it. Getting kicked out of GNR was devastating to him to the point of not wanting to live anymore, thus fueling his drug habit even more to the point of a stroke. I think it's terrible what happened to him because you can see just what a sensitive and caring guy he really is.

Re: Steven Adler OWNS all new GNR drummers
To be honest to me a drummer is a drummer, except Lars from metallica who always got my attention...oh and tommy lee is kinda cool. I sometimes wish things would go right for adler on a human level - but I don't have a problem with the replacement drummers.

I suggest you check out Rush. Neil Peart is anything but just an ordinary drummer.
Re: Steven Adler OWNS all new GNR drummers
I don't agree with you there monkeyman - there are lots of quite bland drummers, but then you have John Bonham, Iain Paice, Mitch Mitchell, Mike Portnoy, Vinnie Paul, Dave Lombardo, Lars (tentatively), drummers who either are extraordinarily talented or have a very unique or original style that is hard to replicate.
I grew up to GNR and Steven was a big influence...he had that swagger and groove plus that smile and big hair...perfect antidote to angry axl!

That's kind of a thing I have, you named the two most famous drummers of the last 30 years. But it isn't really their talent that got them there. Their playing style is a bit flashy, and they're loudmouths. (and in Tommy's case, banged some famous girls) So a lot of people know thier names.
As far as drumming Are they bad? No, but there's a million good drummers out there and they're no better than the majority of the pack, but they found ways to stand out.
As far as wishing things would go right on a human level, Absolutely. Here's hoping

Re: Steven Adler OWNS all new GNR drummers
Adler probably has the best on-album drumming. But Brain and Freese are both more talented than him, and everyone GNR has had is more professional. Adler had and seems to still have no maturity, which is a shame.
Brain's work on CD is disappointing, Axl seemed more interested in hip-hop beats than actual rock. The album is pretty boring for drumming actually, when Frank plays too. A lot of 2 and 4 and hip hop. No tight pockets and few good fills.
For talent I'll go Freese, Brain, Adler, Frank, Sorum. For quality of recorded stuff I'll go Adler, Sorum, Frank-on-CD, Brain-on-CD.
Re: Steven Adler OWNS all new GNR drummers
Steven is weak and hasn't grown past those few years of success. I say weak because he can't beat his addiction. I was an alcoholic, pissed away an eight-year engagement, nearly ruined my marriage, was nearly jailed, nearly killed myself in a car accident, but I saw my problem and set out to kick its ass, and I did. Steven can't, and on top of that is still trying to cash in on something that happened 20 years ago. When you are holding onto something that happened so long ago, you've got issues. He needs to be able to let go of his past to move forward. I hope to hell he gets his shit together, because I cannot and will not support a reunion with Matt fuckin' Sorum playing drums.
Re: Steven Adler OWNS all new GNR drummers
Axlin u can't be serious
No drumming on the UYI and certainly CD come close to touching what Adler laid down on AFD.
the drumming on CD is nothing good at all. It is a beat but there is nothing at all great or memorable about the drumming on CD.
AFD u can fucking air drum that shit. His drumming is almost melodic. The dude plays hooks on drums. I haven't heard many drummers do that.
So technical wise he isnt that great, but he sure can drum his ass off and come up with memorable, hooky beats.
that is rare in music to find a drummer who does that.
