Re: Chinese Democracy UNDER 300,000 copies sold first week?
yeah Killingvector it's a theory deal with it. I do't see people being asked to justify their non music excuses and rational. I'm not gonna sit here and do reseach and find out how many people actually decided after listening that they didn't wanna buy it. Stop trying to dismiss shit based on insecurities. Just admit it's as a possibility. Funny how when I mentiuon this peopel suddenly become defensive about thsi being possible. And this fucking excuse about a "tepid" first single is getting real old. What single on the album wasn't gonna be tepid except maybe Better and I'm not even convinced about that. Bands don't release "tepid" first singles thinking their gonna be "tepid". Sometimes the music speaks for itself. I find it funny how so very few are willing to even cosnider it a posssibility.
The album may have been rejected; that is a possibility but you cannot discount other factors. Therefore, your thesis is not provable. We will see in a few months how things pan out.
I really took CD as an appetizer single with Better waiting to follow with video and full press media promotion right after. Better is about to land and we have not seen the full court press. I pray it happens. If not, Axl is not happy with something.
Many bands release tepid first singles. Most of those albums die horrible deaths. I can think of a certain 'dangerous' band which did not survive such a crash.
I mean people thought thsi thing would fly off shleves based on the name alone. Now it's not and it's becasue of everything else other than the music? C'mon.
Well, they were wrong about the long term marketing strength of GnR. Doesn't mean the music is crap, only the forcasting of fans.
Re: Chinese Democracy UNDER 300,000 copies sold first week?
I've never discounted the other reasons. Just saying it's rather amusing how very few want to even remotely consider the quality of the music played a part as well.
I've been trying to push this point as well. Some of the songs I think are great and amazing but some just aren't as strong.

I do agree that more time is needed before deeming it a complete failure. Yeah the first week numbers are a huge disappointment and definitely lowers the previous expectations of the band name, but we have to see if its capable of sustaining the numbers it has. If it can remain a bit steady and only drop down to 200-250k the second week, and a slight drop 3rd week, its not too bad. If it plummets the 2nd week to anything below 100k, then yes it bombed.
Everything is gonna ride on Better. The 2nd single deserves a chance to take off.
Regarding Best Buy....there's no way in hell they paid 9 bucks a cd when they know damn good and well a ton of those copies are gonna have to be unloaded for $5.99 at some point. If the 9 bucks a copy figure is true, I'm not surprised they are on the verge of financial catastrophe.
james - didn't you say you only expected the album to sell about 250K in week 1? so how can you call 350K a "huge disappointment"?
if this album sells in the neighborhood of what Death Magnetic sells, than it's done about as well as you could hope in today's market. there are alot of different factors going with both albums, but let's keep it simple....metallica is one of the biggest bands in the world. this was their first release in 5 years and was widely described as an "old school" record. the record their long-time fans have wanted for years. it got good reviews and metallica promoted the fuckin hell out of it.
i think total sales of CD compared to DM is a good benchmark. and it's one that cannot be determined for several months.

I'll be real interested to see what happens if come "several months" and album sales are lackluster than what? Will it be more wait and see attitude from fans. If Better blows up big the album has a chance. If it doesn't I can guarantee fans will be saying "well they really haven't put out a radio friendly single. We'll just have to wait and see. Once a more mainstreme single is released the album sales will go through the roof" and blah blah blah.
I do love how Axl and co. have created this safety net of excuses. I mean now if the album fails(sales wise) it'll simply be due to poor promotion. It'll have nothing to do with the album itself.
I thought the album would sell real well right off the bat based on name alone but I've always been a believer that from here on out sales will suffer. I see know reason now to think otherwise. The album didn't sell near as well as I figured it would in week one so......

True. I mean I really like 6 of the songs but as a fan of music I can really like those songs and at the same time know that they won't appeal to a wider audience. I can hear that they don't have that AFD or even Illusion "it" factor in them. And then the ones I don't like I can't imagine your average Joe liking them at all. I think for alot of us we've grown to like/love these songs cause for so long they were the soundtrack to our lives. A soundtrack that noone else even knew about. The songs love'em or hate'em are special to us. I think that skews alot of people's expectations as to what the public will or should think. The individual songs and album as a whole will never be that way to the average person.
Re: Chinese Democracy UNDER 300,000 copies sold first week?
Bottom line. No promo. People are over GNR. Music is not easily accessible, it's from a bygone era. First single not pushed.
But, it doesn't stop me from enjoying it. No one should. Its success or failure in no means affects how I look at CD. I like it. Doesn't mean I'm wrong, just means I still enjoy this style of music.
If sales and chart position and hit singles and industry awards affected my taste in music, then I must be a big fan of the one of the worst, shittiest artists ever: Buckethead. He has no singles, meager sales, even fewer awards and probably has never had an album chart.

I think most hard core fans realize Better is the only real shot at a hit single in today's market. Like I have said, this thing will sink or swim by the end of the year. Week 1 isn't close to what I thought it would be either. In the end, Axl has no excuses. He had everything in the world going for him. Big money backing, plenty of time to record at his own pace, full control of artistic decisions, etc. It was his record. He made his bed, and he will have to lie in it.

And you are arguing it is a bad album?
