Re: Axl has evolved from UYI to CD?
agree for the most part....I wish Axl realized that his main skill and talent is raw emotion.
Yeah, and "do I give a fuck" attitude, all in one raw vocal burst.
Which is why... I liked MyWorld!
(Runs like FUCK! )
Seriously guys, stop fighting, we ALL like different stuff, but we ALL like GnR - right?

Re: Axl has evolved from UYI to CD?
To all the people that think Axl has evolved and grown since UYI, you're right he has. He moved from 1992 to 1994. Congrats to him. He managed to evolve a whole 2 years, which is about as far as the guys in VR evolved with Weiland and his STP sound.
So you think Shackler's Revenge and Rhiad would have fit right in on TSI then?
I actually do think CD is the continuation and progression of Axl's side of GNR. He was interested in electronic stuff, ala my world, and he grew that into the more synthy stuff on this album. Likewise he's famous for epic painio ballads - and he's continued to produce those on this album, with some more modern flourishes, but esentially similar.
I know you don't like the new songs. But its so clear they're from the same author really. Like listen to estranged, breakdown and noverember rain. Then listen to This I love, prostitute and twat. You might like the first set more than the latter, but there's no doubt in my mind that they represent a contuniation of the same lyrical and musical journey.
It's an evolution rather than a total change in Axl's part of GNR. It's still based on Elton John style ballads but it's executed slightly differently as he's progressed.
I think slash has evolved too. He's still mostly based on blues rock but I think his playing has progressed some over the years. I know i'll get shouted down for that cos his best songs are the early ones to most - but at a technical level - some of the solos he's been playing recently incorporate patterns and ideas outside his 'traditional' sphere of playing.
My point is that TIL isn't something that was recorded in 1988, but you can tell it was recorded by that same man later on his journey. Likewise, a song like "Serial Killer" wouldn't have been on AFD, but you can still hear it's slash, just the slash of a few years further down the road.

No, but those were recorded in 1990 and 1991 for the most part. Nothing other than covers would fit on TSI.

It's might be an evolution I guess, but again, it's a 1994 Axl rolled out in 2008. I don't hear it as an evolution - I hear it as a completely different group with the same singer. I don't think it's a continuation at all.

Slash hasn't really evolved either, though I think he became a better technical player. VR doesn't sound like GnR any more than GnR does now other than you can tell the guitar player is the same. Neither really changed themself, just the surrounding parts.

Fair enough...but why is it 1994? Just because they're using synth toys not availiable in 1991 to go with the guitars and stuff?
And why are people sugesting that 1994 Axl would be a bad thing? Do we all dislike UYI and AFD now because they were recorded decades ago.

But why would that be considered a negative by people? Let me put it this way. Slash is famous for that emotive kickass blues guitar. If I buy his solo album and he only played flute because he'd decided to branch out then I'd feel disapointed. He should sound like slash. The interesting change comes in what he chooses to use to accompany him using his natutal talent. It's the same with Axl. When I buy Chinese Democracy I want to hear Axl sounding like Axl - which he does, both it voice lyrics and melodies, and the interesting changes come from the things he's chosen to put with his abilities.
Re: Axl has evolved from UYI to CD?
Well the comparison of Aerosmith and G&R is kind of hard to do given these facts:
When Aerosmith reformed (Tyler and Perry and all original members) they really weren't writing the bulk of their songs anymore. They now have songwriters writing for them. For me the last real Aerosmith lp was Night in the Ruts.
Secondly Joe Perry is no way a better guitarist than Slash. Slash can eat Joe up and spew him out in a second. Period. Did you know that the studio version of Train Kept a rollin on Get your wings lead guitar part is not even Joe Perry? It's a session guitarists. It doesn't even sound like him. : )
I love both bands. I've seen G&R open for Aerosmith and Deep Purple at the Giant stadium and with all due respect to the re-formed Aerosmith and reformed Deep Purple back than with Ritchie Blackmore, G&R blew away both bands out of the water hands down. That's a fact.
And Chienese Democracy blows any Aerosmith lp after Night In the Ruts for sure without even having to argue or list points why.
Re: Axl has evolved from UYI to CD?
I was comparing Aerosmith in the 70's (specifically 73-77) to Gnr 87-91. I don't get in to any discussions about Aerosmith after 1977. And for the record, I think Gnr from 87-91 was better than Aerosmith form 73-77. However, you certainly can find similarities. Gnr nicked from a lot of bands-Zep, New York Dolls, The Stooges, Stones....Aerosmith is obviously only one influence.
As for Axl progressing, he has progressed as an artist individually as he continues to try different things. Now, he isn't doing anything that is really "original" or trendsetting, but he is doing things that are new to him.

Amen and a dash of the old karma to that!:thumbup:
Honestly, I don't want Axl to do anything "modern" like what's on the radio. I think "modern" rock on the radio today is weak and not interesting at all. I want Axl to embrace what he is, which is a great rock frontman, and be that instead of trying to progress to something that isn't progressive at all.
My mum wanted me to be a lawyer - people suck like that, living their own lives n' all! <joking, don't take offence mate!

I think I would like a stripped down Axl album. I would buy CD if they ever remixed it to a more natural sound. I have always said that I thought some of the songs had potential, but there's so much going on that it ruins the music.
You can say that again, sister.
Tommy said it best that a huge problem with (recording) the album is that Axl was left to his own devices.
Just take TWAT. There's no teling how fantastic it would sound with just the 3 guitarists in the band. Not 8 guys playing on top of each other.
But I like a song like Better, for example. It's totally outside the box, especially for Axl. I think he really shines on that song, lyrically and vocally and totally fits him, which shows having Chris as his "Izzy" on the CD era is good. It just sucks he doesn' know when to say when.
Axl is desperately in need of a producer who can challenge him and know how to use Axl's producer talents and passions. But this is the double edge sword that comes with total power.
