Re: Axl has evolved from UYI to CD?
^^
Natural. Axl used to be a brilliant lyricist as far as i'm concerned, far better than ANY of his rock counterparts, glam (80s)/grunge (90s).
But as time goes on, your writing just isn't going to be as good as it once was. Stephen King ain't still writing The Stand or Pet Semetary, you know?
Street of Dreams
TWAT
Catcher (one of his BEST ever)
Prostitute
Are lyrical standouts on CD.
Re: Axl has evolved from UYI to CD?
I don't know if I'd even say he devolved lyrically. I mean, not every song he wrote prior to this album were epics. There were plenty of "Shotgun Blues" type songs in the past. While I still love those songs, they're not exactly lyrical masterpieces.

Axl's lyrics are always great IMO, it's one of the standout features of both old and new GNR. Always deep, always interesting. Sometimes longer than others but always perfect for the mood of the song.
Re: Axl has evolved from UYI to CD?
Yeah I think his lyrics are consistant too, I mean lyrically Madagascar or TWAT are in NO ways a devolution from say Rocket Queen, or Think About You!!!
Imo he's at his best writing about his inner state, and there are songs like that across their career. The real talent is although he lives a lifestyle so far from any of our day-to-day lives, there's still always something there to relate to, even if you're living on welfare cheques in your parent's basement.
It's a humanity that has the same challenges and fears regardless of wealth, fame and status, and he does that into words very well.
Re: Axl has evolved from UYI to CD?
Axl Rose is a lyrical mastermind. Period.
I'm not saying that to kiss his ass, only because it's the truth.
Re: Axl has evolved from UYI to CD?
Axl speaks for the down trodden, thats why he will never cease gaining new fans. Its actually occurred to me that new gnr fans must be a pretty content bunch, judging how some people have criticised Axls lyrics on CD. The sadness and defiance seems suprising to some and mocked by others. Kids today eh?
Personally I lap it up, I dont spend my life wallowing in despair but Axls lyrics are still the main reason why I'm Hardcore, they speak to me more than most other artists. How genuine they are and the emotion contained is unrivalled for me, he fucking means what he says and his voice is aching with passion in all his songs.

I agree with you.
In fact, i'd go so far to say he's VASTLY underrated as a lyricist. He's never been given enough credit for his lyrics.
Nirvana rhymes the word "mosquito & libido"... Axl speaks poetry.
