What about China's rising role on the world stage? China is gaining power at a very fast rate (especially economically). The US, and I'm leaning more towards James' idea on this one, simply wants to show China that their economy may be better, their land army may be larger, but when it comes down to it our military is so technologically advanced that they wouldn't stand a chance against us.
It's certainly not a Chinese aircraft. It's either a US aircraft or a Russian one. My money is on the US.
all very valid points i'm afraid
Re: U.S. sending China a "warning"??
The only war we will see comes from within. Our Arabs blowing themselves up in the name of religion will continue to be the pain in the ass long after they're done in Afghanistan. It's a war of "way of thinking" and "way of life" within, and not of territory.
war is contagious and it's not the gangsters that are the most unpredictable and dangerous it's the wannabes. countries like n.korea and iran could one day soon cause a ripple effect with one irational move that would lead to something much bigger than suicide bombings.
Re: U.S. sending China a "warning"??
Not really. What would they gain despite laying their country in ruins?
NK is an issue that needs to be dealt with, but it's more ruffling with feathers than anything else, and both SK and NK knows it. A war would be devestating to both of them.
Iran, well..they like rethorics. If it goes too far, they will be dealt with accordingly as well
And to lay the video at rest, it's a missile.

i agree but the leaders of the aformentioned nations may not. one nut case with full power is all it takes and it's no longer "who has the biggest and most power wmd's" when the nations who don't, still have enough fire power to blow up half the planet.
Iran, well..they like rethorics. If it goes too far, they will be dealt with accordingly as well
and that's when the essence of unpredictability becomes a potentially horrifying reality.
Re: U.S. sending China a "warning"??
But it's still not a war of territories. However, Iran is a problem. Especially regarding Israel, and that's something I find very alarming. However, let's say Iran's nuclear facilities are attacked. Iran launches a counter attack on Israel, their natural enemy. I mean, first strike will be alright, but after that they stand less chance than a deck of cards. The superiority of Israel and the West is much bigger than people think.
Technology is the key, and those middle eastern states just doesn't have shit. We're in 2010, they're still in 1985.
Re: U.S. sending China a "warning"??
Last week, the Web was aflutter over rumors that a UFO had been spotted over Xiaoshan Airport in Hangzhou, China. There was even video that showed, well, something, soaring high in the sky.
The Atlantic reports that Geoffrey Forden, a weapons expert from MIT, has analyzed several of the alleged UFO videos. He has come to the conclusion that a) what people saw in one of the videos wasn't a UFO, but a rocket, and b) the same video wasn't taken anywhere near China. It was shot near Kazakhstan.
CNN explains how "Forden used scientific theories to examine the images of the flying object that he felt were not created with Photoshop." Then, on a blog, Forden wrote: "It seems to me that a DF-21 [missile] launch somewhere near Jiuquan and aimed at a point somewhere in the eastern Gobi desert is the most likely cause of this 'UFO.'"
Here's where it gets a little tricky. As mentioned, there are actually several "UFO over China" videos floating around on the Web. Some appear to have been altered with photo-editing software, while some were not.
One of the videos making the rounds on the Web may have really been taken at the airport on the night in question. But (there's always a but), those photos are likely of a missile. The Atlantic writes that "the likeliest scenario, it turns out, is that the Great Twinkling Light of Hangzhou was actually a Chinese ballistic missile, the DF-21."
In other words, don't go calling the Men in Black just yet.

no, it doesn't have to be.

yet it is still getting to the point that whoever strikes first can win and some of these inferior nations are slowly but surely gaining the ability to destroy the planet. in response to your scenario, iran and israel may be livining 1985 but what happpens when one of them calls on a friend - the other will then do the same. then the enemies of those two will jump in, etc. it could happen. every nation may be terrified of us on their own but sooner or later two or more nations with the combined power to destroy the world are gonna find a common intersest on the opposite side of israel and the usa.
Re: U.S. sending China a "warning"??
The U.S. have been selling tons of sensitive shit to the Chinese for decades. I don't see it beneath their management to unload some flashy cocaine funded black op fifty paygrades above the President type of device in return for some goodwill or whatever.
Yeah Clinton was having a yard sale that was China invite only, but they still don't even come close to the level we are at publicly. When they cant even build a proper aircraft carrier on par with ours, they aint flying "UFOs" with lasers.
I wouldn't really say it's in dire straits. It's not optimal, but the U.S. is still the biggest corporation on the planet and nobody is ever going to call the debts on the most dangerous and powerful creature in the cage.
I agree that we're not really a country anymore but a combination of corporations on the hunt for resources(the favorite thirst quencher being Texas Tea). However, China is also thirsty for the same thirst quenchers and their population continues to grow and eventually all those bike riders are gonna be driving cars. While I think Russia is much more worthy of being on our radar, you gotta keep an eye on China. They are an economic power that will eventually have to be taken down a couple notches. If any of our ABM systems ever increase their success rate, China is fucked because they simply don't have a big enough nuclear deterrent in place.
Never going to happen and they both know it. The economic ties are way too tight, and nobody would ever consider war or other malignent acts as viable political options.
I agree that globalization changed the dynamics of these systems, but we're in an era where major powers are wanting to drift away from the dollar and get rid of its power as the world's reserve currency. War not a viable option in that circumstance?? Tell that to the Middle East which was considering losing the dollar peg and are now staring down the rifle of the U.S. military that has an itchy trigger finger. If Iran and Saudi Arabia announce tonight that the dollar peg is ancient history, we control the oil fields tomorrow.
Never underestimate the United States when it comes to raining shit storms on parades, especially in this era where left is right and right is left and both love giving the military a near trillion annual budget and will not hesitate to spend it and ask for more.
The ONLY country in the world that can even consider moving its chess pieces in a way that might put us in a "pickle" is Russia, and they are sitting on vast reserves of oil and as long as we cool it on the "Star Wars" crap in Eastern Europe, they're not gonna give a fuck what we do. They know that if the U.S. falls, they become the world's superpower.
i agree that the us wouldn't flaunt something classified like that as a warning
The U.S. "flaunted" the B2 bomber in a year of relative peace, which was mind blowing at the time and 23 years later no country has replicated it.
We're overdue in seeing some high tech weapons systems. Bring em on I say, and actually start using them in these two wars we are currently in.
Eh, why would they fly over China? You're thinking 1960's technology ideas aka U2 and SR-71 spy-planes. It's obsolete. They're not needed. You have satellites taking superb pictures of anything you want in any country. Flying over China, especially with a gigantic contrail everyone can see. Really? Really?! It lights up the damn sky as a shining fucking comet.
No I'm thinking 2010. Russia sends bombers within inches of our airspace and not doing it secretly, yet you think the U.S. cant test a new project over Chinese territory knowing they cant come close to touching it and never actually admitting it publicly?
In the early 80s, The B1 bomber "wasn't needed" as we had ICBMs up the ying yang, yet that fact didn't stop the U.S. from producing it. The bomber was a way to get a massive nuclear strike deep into Russia without a moments notice. By the time Russia knew a strike had occurred, half the country would have been in flames.
Alright, so it's not a spyplane, but let's say the Aurora project showing off it's colors. Why would they light up the entire damn night sky then. Horrible way of staying undetected. Even so, I still get the feeling of an 1980's cold war project finally being ready. 25 years too late.
Who said it was trying to stay undetected? When you're aiming lasers and/or lights on a city causing its airport to shut down, I wouldn't call that wanting to be undetected.
Good point on this possibly being the Aurora. Been so long since I heard that it didn't even cross my mind.
Agreed. Territorial wars are over.
Tell that to Iraq, Afghanistan, and soon to be Iran. If your territory has something we want, whether water or in this case oil, look out.
People still have the mindset of ww2 and cold war. Thinking a WW3 is equal to WW2. Those days are over.
I agree with this to an extent. If/when WWIII takes place, it will be entirely different than the previous two world wars, with or without the use of nuclear weapons.
Launch another cold war? Get your head out of the bucket of paint, son!
There's essentially a new cold war brewing between the U.S. and Russia, and China will probably play a bigger role this time.
Hot off the presses....
Baltic NATO member Estonia on Tuesday slammed its neighbour and Soviet-era master Moscow for deploying missiles near their border, saying the move ran counter to ongoing fence-mending efforts.
"Russia's decision to position Iskander-class missiles on its western border is an alarming move," Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet told AFP.
On Saturday, the commander of Russia's ground forces Alexander Postnikov told Moscow Echo radio that Iskander missile systems were being put into service in the military region around the city of Saint Petersburg, which lies some 140 kilometres (90 miles) from Estonia.
Postnikov said the missiles would mainly be based in that region, but added they could also be deployed elsewhere at short notice.
Russia has also warned that it could deploy Iskander missiles in its Baltic territory of Kaliningrad -- which is sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania, both ex-communist NATO and EU members.
Iskander missiles have a range of 400 kilometres (250 miles), Estonian Defence Minister Jaak Aaviksoo noted.
The missiles deployed near Saint Petersburg would therefore be able to reach not only Estonia but also Lithuania, their fellow NATO and EU member Latvia, and neutral EU member Finland.
"Such a step is incomprehensible, considering both present-day security threats and present relations between Russia and NATO," the Baltic News Service quoted Aaviksoo as saying.
"We are aware of the deployment of Iskander missiles in the immediate vicinity of Estonian and NATO borders and we keep very close watch on everything that goes on beyond our borders," he said.

A few months ago Russia did a nuclear attack simulation on Poland.
These are strategies taken from the 80s era of the Cold War.
As far as the mindset of this "UFO" being a missile, anyone care to show video footage of a missile lighting up the ground underneath it while in flight?
China wouldn't launch its own missile and then need to shut down its own airport while the testing is underway. PLEASE.
IF that is true, they're further behind than previously thought.
