I've only ever used one so called pick up line ever.
"If you were a booger I'd pick you"
I think it worked cause it was so terrible yet harmless and not greaseballish. her reaction was "Oh my god that's awful, is that the best you can do?" And my asnwer was "yup". She laughed and that was that, we dated for about four months.

I stopped at one too. New Years Eve party when I was 18.

She slapped me. As revenge I downed half her bottle of Vodka and passed out in the snow. Worst hangover I ever had.

So basically, you got revenge because you were an ass in the first place??? Great revenge though!!!

Yeah I generally found pickup lines rarely worked. Instead they have to be so lame or so funny that you are almost doing it for a joke. Then they have a chance as simply being an ice breaker, like in Bono's case. If you get the girl laughing that's then a great starting point for conversation from there.
My mates and I use used to dare each other to go up to girls and throw out a cheesy pick up line just for laughs. My favourite was to go up to a girl and say:
"Quick grab your jacket we're leaving, you've just scored".
